Eren's POV
"See? She wasn't that bad, Armin. I think she's just misunderstood. With all the talk of her and her parents' deaths." I say with a chuckle as we began to walk home together. My thoughts were all on her now. "I think she just needed a friend- and that's why she's much better. She's understandable. Pushed away-"
"Alright, alright, I was wrong." Armin says with a heavy sigh, speeding up a bit. "It's just... she used to scare everyone by staring at us coldly. Almost like... Mr. Ackerman. Well... they are kinda related..."
"Kinda? How so?"
Hearing that really perked my head up. Armin nods his head to confirm what he had told me. "Mr. Ackerman is like... her uncle or something. When her parents died, Mr. Ackerman adopted her into his family with Mrs. Zoe-Ackerman. He's like... really protective of her. But it makes sense. With his family members being killed off, he wants to protect the survivor."
"Weird... I didn't know that."
"No one knows that they're related. It was just a piece of information that was faded away. Almost like a rumor... now that's considerably weird."
I shrugged a bit, feeling a bit of pain on my back. "Jeez... let's hurry home. Mom's making some amazing brownies this afternoon! We got lots of vanilla ice cream as well- doesn't that sound amazing, Armin? Nice, warm, gooey brownies with a cold scoop of vanilla ice cream? Come on! Race ya there!"
That brought a smile on his face, "You're on, Eren!"
Steadying ourselves, we were in the empty street, bowing over to ready ourselves to sprint. We exchanged mischievous smirks, and we slowly began to count down from 3. As we said it together, there was this sense of... excitement. How acting as a child again in high school made it seem very... intriguing.
"Run!" We both called out once we finished with the number 1.
My legs felt so much power as we began to sprint through the empty street. Armin soon fell behind within a few seconds, but I couldn't stop myself. I kept on running full speed, until I was forced to stop. At first, there was nothing... until I slammed into a hard object. We both collided to the concreted floor, massaging our sore injuries.
"O-Ow... ow..." I whispered, struggling to get up. A patch on my arm felt a bit numb, and when I saw it, skin was scrubbed off. Small beads of ruby gems began to grow through that small field of torn up skin. Breathing through my teeth, I could feel how painful it was getting.
"M-My snack!"
I turned to the person who cried that, and turns out, it was Sasha. On the floor laid a devastated mess of a sad... sad potato. Butter and sour cream were splattered- almost like blood at a crime scene. Pieces of tomatoes and cheese laid around the potato. Sasha looked up at me, tears nearly falling down her cheeks.
"M-My snack..." She repeats.
"S-Sorry, Sasha!" I cried, staring down at the mess. "I-I didn't mean it!"
She began to wail, and I used my hands to scoop the mess. "I-I'll kill you for destroying it... my poor, poor snack..!"
Backing away, I could feel someone behind. "A-Armin... we gotta go." When I turned, there was no one there. Armin was still struggling up the hill. There was no way he could've gotten behind me and back down the hill to only struggle up it. "Armin? Who was there?"
Sasha continued to wail in pain, and I felt warm with embarrassment. Quickly, I grabbed Armin and hurried home. There was so much apologizes flowing out of my mouth as we quickly made our escape to my house. Something was definitely up.
* * *
"Mom! I'm home!" I called out, panting with Armin as we fell through the door. "Mom?!"
"Kitchen, dear!" She calls back. With a weak effort, I grabbed Armin's hand and pulled him through the house and into the kitchen. My jaw dropped when I saw who was there: Mikasa. "Ah, Eren. You got a guest. I believe she's your classmate, correct?"
"Mikasa?" I asked, calling her out as I attempted -failing miserably- to grab a brownie. "W-What are you doing here?"
"I called your number, Eren. Didn't know it wasn't an actual phone number, but a house number. Sorry... I wanted to thank you again for the missing work."
I waved it off, quickly snatching a small piece of brownie. Of course, Mom slapped my hand for stealing it, but I still ate it. "Mikasa, you didn't have to come here."
She looked away, almost like she was embarrassed. "Sorry... I just didn't have a friend... so I don't know how things work. I'm sorry for disappointing you."
"I-I didn't say that! I-I just meant... I didn't expect you to come here... anyways, since you're here, we can go over your missing work. Mom, I know I said Armin was gonna stay for awhile, can Mikasa-"
"Just do your school work first, Eren. Then you guys can play games. That's our rule." Mom says coldly.
Nodding my head, I led Armin and Mikasa up to my room so we can work on our homework together. Just like friends.
