I had never been good with names. The kids walking all around me had just introduced themselves, and I only remembered three of them. Sophie was the blonde girl who lived down the street from me, Keefe was the idiotic boy who seemed to be obsessed with Sophie, and Biana- wait. Was it Biana or Briana? Welp, make that two. The brown-haired boy who must've been the girl's brother was... Finn, maybe? And the strawberry blonde was... I had no idea. At least I had Linh. I would never forget her name.
Keefe suddenly stopped walking, and I realized we must've been at Sophie's house. She lived in a yellow house, about the same size as mine. We went into the backyard.
"These are the official laws of the Foster Fan Club," Keefe said, handing us each a piece of paper. "You have to sign that you won't break them to become a member." I rolled my eyes. This kid really was an idiot. I read the paper.
RULES OF BEING A FOSTER FAN CLUB MEMBER
1. Do not offend or hurt Sophie
2. Keep Sophie's secrets secret, as you may learn some
3. Remain loyal to the club; do not spread rumors
4. Support all club members
Scribbled in at the bottom was a rule number five: Keep smooching out of sight and at a minimum. I rolled my eyes again. What was I getting myself into?
"Does anybody have a pencil?" I asked. Keefe handed me one and I signed off at the bottom. These were the easiest rules I had ever been given.
"Congratulations! You and Linh are officially members of the Foster Fan Club!" Keefe said when Linh handed in her paper. I wonder if it had that fifth rule had been on her paper, too. "Now take a seat."
For the next 20 minutes we sat on the ground and listened to Keefe as he told of Sophie stories that simply could not have been true. He stood behind a giant cardboard box and had a gold-painted plaque with 'PRESIDENT' written in Sharpie on it.
"Hold on," I said to Sophie, needing to make sure Keefe wasn't lying. "You jumped off a cliff with an umbrella to see if you could be Marry Poppins and you fell into the water and broke a bunch of bones and got a concussion?" Sophie nodded. "Well then... I don't really know if it's safe to be friends with you- wait, we are friends, right?"
"Of course! And I did that when I was eight." Sophie told me. That... didn't make it any better.
Keefe droned on for about ten more minutes before the brown-haired boy groaned. "Can we end this meeting?" he asked. "I want to play a game."
Keefe looked hurt. "Fine, then," he said. "I hereby declare the end of this Foster Fan Club meeting." He produced a wooden mallet from... somewhere and slammed it against the cardboard, causing it to fold up. Then he picked it up and carried it away towards Sophie's shed.
"What extremely fun game did you have in mind that was so important it couldn't wait until the end of our meeting, Fitzy?" Ah! Fitz! That was his name!
"Uh... I don't know. Hide and seek, maybe? We could go inside and play monopoly, I don't care. I just wanted to be done with the meeting," Fitz admitted.
"Hide and seek sounds good," the brown-haired girl agreed. Come to think of it, she looked a lot like Fitz. Maybe they were related?
"Fine," Keefe said, surrendering. "Who wants to seek?"
"Um, not me, because that wouldn't really be fair. And not Tam or Linh, because they don't know the property." She back and forth between me and Linh. "Sorry, I'm speaking for you. Would you want to seek?" I shook my head and so did Linh.
"I'll do it," said the strawberry blonde.
"Okay Dex, count to 30," Sophie told the boy- who's name was Dex. Wait- what was the other boy's name again? Flynn?
