My alarm woke me up at six o' clock sharp. I stumbled out of bed, muttering about how early it was. But that was before I realized what day it was. The first day of school! That'd mean I'd get to see Jensi and Marella and Maruca and everybody else! Quickly, I got dressed in my best clothes. For me, the first day of school wasn't like any other day. It was a family reunion.
Fitz, being a freshman this year, had to get up at, like, 5:30, so he was long gone. This would be my first year getting on the bus alone. I waited excitedly, knowing that as soon as I got on the bus I would see the familiar faces of Jensi and Maruca. Maruca and I weren't best friends, but we talked sometimes. But Jensi was a whole other story. We were best friends, plus, I had a huge crush on him. I waited a little longer and soon there was the bus, rolling down the street. Closer, closer and...
It went right past me.
What? I thought. Why didn't the bus stop for me? I ran back down the street and flung open the door to my house.
"Mom! The bus drove right past me! Can you take me to school?" I called upstairs. My mom came downstairs. I was lucky she hadn't left for work yet.
"Of course, honey. Get in the car. I'll try and figure out what happened." And so my mom drove me to school
I walked into the school, hoping to see my friends waiting for me at the entrance. They weren't. Slowly, sadly, I walked to the homeroom printed on my schedule.
"Biana!" someone whisper-hissed as I walked in. I looked around and my heart leaped. Tam was sitting in the very back of the room. I frowned. He couldn't have been the whisperer, as he was fully immersed in his book and hadn't noticed me come in. I looked around again.
"Oh, Jensi!" I said when I saw the familiar curly-haired boy sitting in the second row. With one last glance at Tam, I slid into the seat next to Jensi.
"How was your summer?" I asked him, realizing we hadn't met up at all over break.
"My summer? Oh, it was awesome! Me and the guys had a giant pool party and a water gun fight that lasted weeks! Of course," he added sheepishly, "it would've been better with you."
I blushed. "Aw, right back at you. But my summer was pretty awesome as well. I got to meet a few new friends. You see that boy over there?" I pointed to Tam.
"Oh, him? He looks cool. I mean, check out his bangs! But he's not very social, is he?"
I shrugged. "He can be. I guess he's just a little nervous, but he's actually really nice. And he has a sister, a twin sister. Her name is Linh. She must be in a different homeroom... I think I'll go talk to him. He'll know where Linh is, I'm sure." I suggested. Jensi nodded, but he seemed distant.
I would never forget the look in Jensi's eyes as I sat down next to Tam in the back of the room.
Jealousy.
