"Witch!"

"Look at her, she has two different eyes! Freak!" She shielded her face as the village kids of Old Corona whipped stones, "Artemis, It's time to come inside!" blue and gold eyes turned towards the direction of her mother's voice, "Coming, Mama!" she started to run back towards the house when one of the larger boys shoved her down,

"Where do ya think you're goin'?"

"L-Leave her alone" her mis-matched eyes landed on a boy about her age, with dark hair and a teal streak through his bangs, he didn't look very menacing, standing there with a tree branch in hand.

"Oh, it's just Varian..." the other kids laughed, "Artemis!" she could hear her mother call for her again, pale blonde hair falling into her face as she lifted herself back to her feet, her dress was covered in mud now, "This is boring, let's just go." The group of bullies left the two smaller children behind.

The boy stepped up to her and she cast her eyes downward "You shouldn't have done that, now you'll be a target too." He shrugged, dropping the stick on the ground "You're not hurt, are you?" he seemed to be looking her over for injuries when a woman's voice grew closer.

"Artemis, there you are!" The platinum blonde kept her eyes cast downward, "Sweetheart, why is your dress all dirty?" The woman finally spotted the young boy, "Oh, hello young man." Her smile was kind an inviting.

"The older boys were picking on her, I chased them off though" the woman smiled, laughing a little at his act of puffing out his chest. "Who's your friend, Artemis? He's very charming." The little girl blushed a deep crimson, "V...Varni..." she had only just heard his name but couldn't get it right, "That's alright." He beamed, he did have an unusual name, "My name's Varian."

"Well, thank you, Varian." The brunette woman pushed her daughter forwards, "Don't be rude, Artemis, say thank you." The little girl finally brought her eyes up to her face and puffed out her cheeks in an attempt to be intimidating.

"Artemis..." her mother's tone was soft yet commanding, "Thank you, Varnian...oh...that's still not right..." she seemed to be getting frustrated, and he couldn't help but giggle as she struggled with his name.

"Varian." She looked up at her mother who was looking on with encouragement as the little girl just stuck out her hand, "Thank you, Varian." He looked at her hand a bit confused but shook it.

"Well, how about we get you home and cleaned up, hm?" Blue and gold eyes stared up at her mother's blue one's respectively. "Can you get home all right, Varian? Or do you want us to walk with you?" He smiled, revealing two large buck teeth, "I'll be okay!" and with that the three went their separate ways.

Artemis and Varian became quick friends, he kept the older kids away from her, The boy had learned her was a year older than The small blonde and he was absolutely fascinated by her eyes, "It's like one is the sun and the other is the moon, it's cool!" she'd never been told that her eyes were anything other than 'freaky' and the compliment brought the crimson color blush back to her face, her blush in turn made him smile. "Varian!" the boy turned his gaze towards the approaching man who towered above the two small children, upon seeing the small blonde with his son a smile grew on his face, "Hello, Artemis." It has certainly taken her some time to get the older mans name right, but now she greeted him with a happy smile "Morning Quirin!" she waved excitedly, the gargantuan man scooped both children up, placing them on his shoulders as he carried on his walk.

"Papa, when are you going to Corona next?" the burly man kept his eyes on the path ahead of him, "Why?"

"Can we bring Artemis with next time?" Quirin paused in his steps, "If Delilah says it's okay, then I have no problems with that. You can ask when we get back into the village." It wasn't long before the rooftops of Old Corona came back into view. Speak of the devil, the brunette woman was waiting for them at the fork.

"There you are." She smiled down at the blonde as Quirin set her firmly back on the dirt path. "Mama, Quirin and Varian were talking about going to Corona, can I go? Please, please, pleeeeease?" her eyes were hopeful.

"She won't be any trouble?" Delilah looked to the dark-haired man, then at the little boy who was giving her puppy dog eyes.

"No trouble at all, it'll keep Varian occupied while I get what we need."

"Yay!" the two children cheered as the circled the two adults. Delilah was thrilled that her daughter had come out of her shell so much in the last month.

"Would you two care to join us for dinner?" Delilah propositioned, "That sounds wonderful, thank you."

The trips to Corona with Quirin and Varian had become a common adventure for Artemis as the two kids grew older, "Come on, Artemis, you can see the Ocean from here!" Quirin had chosen to take a more scenic route this trip, upon his sons request, the older man just chuckled.

Varian was 14 now and Artemis would be 13 tomorrow, so this visit to the kingdom was actually a surprise. The blonde laughed at his antics but ran to catch up with him, her blonde braid trailing behind her, her gaze widened at the scene before her,

"It really is the ocean!" The raven-haired boy beamed at her, his first birthday surprise for her was a success, he took her moment of distraction and tucked a flower into her hair.

"Perfect..." dual colored eyes turned with an intrigued look, "Hm?" he hurried to catch up to his father, hiding the blush that spread over his cheeks. Artemis smiled, hurrying to catch up.

"So why are you two being so tight-lipped about why they were making a trip to Corona, they didn't need anything. The three walked in silence for a while longer until Quirin's voice broke the peace.

"There's the gates." The blonde stared curiously towards the familiar gates of Corona, "Will one of you two finally tell me why we're here at the main city?"

"it's a surprise, Artemis" Her science-obsessed friend just grinned again, "The thing about surprises is that you're not supposed to know anything until we get where we're going." She huffed in annoyance, "Now come on, I want you to meet someone!" he grabbed her hand and tugged her along, the blonde laughing at his excitement.

The size of Corona's main gate never ceased to amaze her, the giant golden sun painted on the door filled her with a sense of warmth every time they visited. "Okay, you have to close your eyes."

"Varian..." he stood his ground, crossing his arms as if to make a statement, huffing again, she closed her eyes and heard the gates open, the dark-haired teen took her hand and guided her into the main city. It wasn't until a crowd of people screamed 'Surprise!' that she was allowed to open her eyes.

"Oh...a crowd of people I...don't know..." she put on a strained smile as she took in what she could only call a group of thugs, the man from Varian's various posters of some thief a less than enthusiastic looking dark-haired woman, and a very cheery blonde who quickly enveloped her into a hug.

"Artemis, meet the gang." Varian stepped to the side, pointing at each person respectively, "That there in the helmet is Atilla, the mime is Ulf, that there, that's big-nose, hook-foot and Shorty and over there is Cass, Flynn rider-"

"Eugene." Varian ignored his correction, "And last but not least, Corona's crown princess, Rapunzel. He indicated to the blonde who had finally let go of his friend.

As Artemis finally got a good look at the blonde woman before her she felt an odd tingling sensation in her left eye.

"Artemis...?" she turned towards Varian and he knit his eyebrows together at the sight before him, "your eye...it's glowing."
