Exertion
Legs lean into a stretch,
Already aware of the strain
They are about to endure
That is as taught as a drawn bow string.Sweat begins to drip down the brow,
Marking its path like a snake
Whose prey runs far away
With hopes, it wants to be safe.Heart pounds in the throat,
Head growing light as a feather
That becomes heavy when it lands,
And a dull thud of lost hope resounds.Muscles strain against flushed skin,
Gripping the pain for all to feel
Like iron shackles too tight for comfort,
Unable to be shaken off.Brain fumbles to make sense of the stars,
The sweat making it hard to see
The sunlight has disappeared in the darkness,
Thoughts escaping in puffs of exhaled air.Limbs spread with soreness,
The marathon leaving its signature
One movement,
And a scream of agony. One thought returns,
Will this ever be worth it?
