Sometimes, it really isn't what you think it is.
Myles' POV
Bri and I had gotten into the regular cycle of meeting up at her locker after school. We don't talk often during school. Instead, we just occasionally say hello in the hallways. I know people stare whenever I greeted her because they just weren't accustomed to me noticing people outside of my group. I'm really not that bigheaded as they think.
Briar, was clearly an exception to me, and my friends made sure of that. Every now and then, one of the boys would ask something along the lines of "when are you planning on asking her out?" or "are you two secretly dating?". However, I always told them the same answer. "She's just a friend of mine."
I get the worst of it right after she is out of our views, especially from Kolton, my best friend. I'll tell you what, when it comes to advice, Kolton is the one to go to. Even though he's a crazy curly haired guy, he knows a lot about life. One look at Kolton's home life, you wouldn't understand how he is so optimistic towards life.
~ flashback ~
It was a warm afternoon, and Myles had arrived at their doorstep to hear an argument between Kolton and someone else.
"You're the one who's meant to be caring for my dad, not me!"
"Why you little – "
I winced, tuning out of the conversation. I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but it's almost as if I turned up at the wrong place at the wrong time. Should I stay or should I go?
Hesitantly, I pressed on the doorbell, hoping that my best friend would be the one who would answer the door. The door opened to reveal a man in his mid-forties. He had light hair that was parted neatly down the centre and a sour look on his face, like he had bitten into a lemon. In fact, he was the carer of Kolton's father.
Billy's face hardened. "What do you want?"
Jeez, Billy needs to chill. I had never met Billy until today, and Kolton hardly ever spoke of him. Now I understand why he was someone that Kolton wouldn't want to talk about.
"I, uh, just came to visit my buddy Kolton, sir."
"Is that so? Well, 'your buddy' is busy at the moment," he slammed the door shut.
With a deep sigh, I retreated down the driveway. I must have been so clouded by my thoughts that I didn't hear anything else at all.
"Yo Myles." A hand clamped down onto my back.
I turned around and bumped my fist to Kolton's. "Holy crap, you nearly had me there."
"I think you've got some explaining to do," I said and Kolton's smile slipped from his face.
Billy was the reason why Kolton had struggled to complete his homework and assignments on time. This 'carer' didn't even care that Kolton had a life outside of home. All he cared about was the money he earned from doing hardly anything at all.
There was a constant buzz coming from my bag. I dug through my bag and retrieved it from the very bottom. I swiped to answer the call.
"What's up?"
"Brunch at Junior's on Saturday morning? Josh and Ethan can't come because of their hockey game, plus Kiara was begging for me to go with her."
"Sure, I'll be there."
"One more thing Myles, you should bring that girl of yours."
"For the last time, she's not my –"
Kolton chuckled. "Just invite her man."
He ended the call and I tossed my phone back into my bag.
Classic Kolton.
Once he tells you to do something, you gotta do it.
No question.
What do you think of Myles and Kolton's friendship?
Just remember, if you are facing troubles at home, don't be afraid to speak up. Talk to a friend or a trusted adult because it isn't healthy to bottle up your feelings. If you're not ready to talk yet, maybe try journaling as a start. You can release your feelings onto a page, letting your words take you into some other place.
I'm always here for you all if you ever feel the need to talk to someone <3
Hope you guys are well!
