"Horror or action?" I asked him, holding up the two boxes.
"Action all the way," He said from the kitchen, "Put the Underworld series,"
"Well," I trailed off but put the series anyway. I don't know what his obsession is with this series, but he will never get tired of watching this bunch of movies. He says he likes the way Kate Beckinsale fights. And I have to admit, she does fight well.
The first movie started, and he came with a big bowl of popcorn and drinks and flopped down beside me on the mattress laid down on the floor.
Back in Brooklyn, Tony used to take army training on the weekends when he was sixteen and unfortunate for me, he used to drag me with him. And then two years when we received an invitation to Navy boot camp for teenagers, he accepted it happily, but I didn't. I knew I wouldn't survive a Navy Bootcamp.
Anyway, Navy Bootcamp is one of those few things that we haven't done/experienced together.
Tony has always been the intelligent, sporty, and smart one of us both, Nisa was the smart one of us three. He can be a nerd and jock at a time. He always wanted to learn everything, and he has known what he wanted. I, on the other hand, I still don't know what I want to do in life. I can't fit in even today. And I'm still the shame on my family.
"Nia, come back to earth," Thankfully, Tony's voice stopped the train of my thoughts. Or I would have gone to a place I didn't want to.
"Oh, sorry, what?" I shook my head as if to clear it.
"You okay?" He asked
"Yeah," I said, "Yeah, I'm fine," He clearly wasn't satisfied with my answer since he glared me. And man, that was one scary glare.
"Just thinking about stuff. I'm the outcast of the family. And because of me, you are away from our parents. I just—"
"Stop thinking about it, Nia. Our parents do a very crapy job of being parents. And our relatives don't give two shits about us. And even if they do, then well, good for them. Because sure as hell don't care what they think. I love you more. And I care about you more," He said lowly "Hell, you are my baby sister. And it's my job, my duty, to protect you and give you everything you want. And I'm not here with you because I feel obligated. I'm here because I want to. I would choose you, my sister, my partner in crime, my best friend over any of them,"
"So stop feeling guilty and just enjoy. Enjoy Manhattan, the new school, new people, new environment. Look, I know I told you to keep a good record this time, but don't turn into a saint. Skip school, enjoy the new hot pieces of boys, break rules, but please don't get caught," He said, laughing and pulled me to him.
"You know, you are probably the weirdest brother ever," I laughed, wrapping my arms around his figure.
"Well, I probably am. But you are to blame too. You are the weirdest baby sister ever," His chest rumbled as he laughed, "But don't you ever change. I love you just the way you are. I understand that I gave our mother my word that you will do something exceptional in your life, but you know what? You being you is you doing something exceptional in your life. If she doesn't understand it, then it's her fault,"
I didn't know what to say to that, so I kept quiet and kept stuffing my mouth with popcorn keeping my eyes on the screen. Tony didn't say anything either, he just kept quiet and ran his fingers gently through my hair, soothing me, and keeping me from drifting back to my dark thoughts.
*
"Morning," I muttered groggily, as I sat on the kitchen stool.
"You look like shit," Tony said as a greeting.
