Description: He hit send, then a tree.
Story:
It was too early, Remus decided as he sat up wearily in bed. He wasn't quite sure what had woken him up, but the sky was still dark. Glancing at the clock, he saw it was closer to five in the morning than six.

He groaned, flopping back onto the bed, relishing the space he had to spread out. He heard the banging on the front door again and jumped. Who on Earth would be at his door this early?

He shuffled out of bed, rubbing his eyes, his bare feet shuffling cross the carpet down the hall. He held his arms tightly around himself, wishing he'd slipped on a sweater. All he had on was a t-shirt and pajama pants.

He unlocked the door and swung it open, blinking his eyes to adjust to the sight of the two officers at his door. He was suddenly very aware of his 'I just got out of bed' look.

He didn't know what the standard protocol was to greeting police officers at your door at 5:10 in the morning. "Um, is there something wrong?" He settled on.

One officer looked down, her features twisting in sympathy. "I'm afraid there is, Mr. Lupin. You see--"

She went on to tell him that his husband was dead. He couldn't quite believe his ears. Sirius...Sirius couldn't be dead.

"I'm sorry," her partner said, his lips set in a straight line. "He was in a motorcycle accident. Pronounced dead at the scene. He was texting and driving."

"But he never does that," Remus tried to argue, to make these people understand that the man they found wasn't his husband, because his husband didn't text and drive.

The officers didn't know what to say to his denials. "It's not him, he's--he's just late is all, he's just late. He'll be home soon, you'll see."

The woman rested a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Mr. Lupin, I'm so sorry, but it's true. Your husband won't be coming home."

That's about when Remus broke down. It hadn't quite settled in yet, but he couldn't stop shaking and his tears wouldn't stop coming. He fell to the carpet and pulled his knees up to his chest, trying to make himself as small as possible.

He realized then why the bed had been empty that morning. Sirius hadn't come home. And he never would. The bed would be empty of him forever.

Remus didn't want it to be. His heart ached as he thought about all the cuddles and stories and sweet kisses that were shared, that would never again be shared. And it hurt.

And then James and Lily were there. "Oh, baby, we just heard," Lily's voice lilted with sadness as she dropped to her knees on the carpet and pulled Remus into a fierce hug.

She was crying; they all were. Sirius had been everything to Remus, but he'd been just as much to Lily and James too.

Remus wished he'd stayed up. He was supposed to stay up. Lately, Sirius had been taking the later shifts at his job, the ones that lasted until 11:00 some nights, others until 1:00. Remus meant to stay up and wait for Sirius. He'd promised, even. But he'd been so tired.

When Remus went to see the motorcycle, he didn't cry. He just felt empty. The motorcycle was warped terribly, wrapping around a tree not far off the road.

You see, Sirius had been texting and driving. Remus didn't want to believe it at first, but he was forced to. He'd hit send, then a tree.

Even years later after Sirius died, Remus would still take out his phone just to read the messages. He knew it wasn't healthy, and it only hurt, but he couldn't bare to let go of this tiny piece of Sirius, the only piece he had left.

It was also with intense guilt that Remus had to live with the fact that Sirius died texting him. Every once in awhile he'd look at the messages.

I'll be home soon <3

K I'll wait up for you. I love you.

He never got a reply.
