"Whatcha eatin'?"
Chuta Bigbang, a tall 7-year-old, looked up from the book he was reading to eye the person in front of him. It was a small, brown-haired boy, maybe the same age, and he was curiously pointing at the unique looking caramel candy that he had brought to school. His mom had made it, and he was supposed to give it to one of his teachers as a thank-you gift...but he had gotten hungry.
"Um... it's caramel...homemade," he answered shyly. It was his first year at this place, and he wasn't that much of a social person. The world always seemed so scary. His parents always fought. There was a lot of rain in his neighborhood. (Even though he questioned how that was even remotely possible.) Every time he watched the news, there was either a story about murders, kidnappings, or a fire. Books were beginning to stray away from happiness and romance, humor and fantasy. Most of the books that filled stores had nothing but violence, nothing but murder and drugs and sex. He began to believe that he couldn't trust anyone. Even this young boy seemed threatening, with his dark eyes and thick eyebrows giving him a serious demeanor.
"Can I have some? I only ate caramel one time, it was at a Christmas festival. It wasn't too sweet, but I liked the way it stuck in my teeth. It felt funny." the boy said, holding out his hand. Chuta cautiously stared at it. So that was it? He just wanted some candy? Oh, well that wasn't so scary. Chuta reached into the star-patterned bag, pulled out a couple of pieces, and plopped them in the boy's hand.
"Thanks, I love these. I'm gonna sit here now, okay? I'm bored, and I want someone to talk to."
He sat down on the wet grass, right next to Chuta. Crossing his legs, he ripped the wrapper off of one of the pieces before throwing it in his mouth. Chuta offered a nervous smile, silently saying thank you. What else could he do?
Maybe he could try to make an effort. Like, this was the first dude who didn't run away from his intimidating height. There had to be something he could say to him.
"What's your name?"
The boy raised a brow, biting into another piece of caramel. Covering his mouth, he mumbled, " 'Agathru."
"Hmm?"
Swallowing thickly, the boy cleared his throat before repeating himself. "Wa-ta-ru. You spell that W-A-T-A-"
"I know how to spell, dude," Chuta said, cutting him off.
"Alright, just makin' sure. What's your name?" Wataru asked, resting his head in his hands. Chuta then looked down. Gee, he forgot how this introduction thing was about to work.
"Hey, c'mon. What's your name? It's not an embarrassing one, is it? Don't worry, I'll try not to laugh." Wataru promised, holding four fingers in the air.
"Chuta. M-my name is Chuta." The orange wearing child sighed. Wataru gave him a perplexed expression, preparing himself for the laughter to come.
"That's not embarrassing at all. What were you getting all shy for?" Wataru giggled, shaking his head as he moved a bang out of his eyes." You're funny, man. Hey, can I be your friend? Or, well, do you wanna be mine? My other friends and I were about to play astronauts, and you can join if you want." He pointed over to the monkey bars. There stood five kids, three boys, and two girls. They were all dressed in little astronaut suits, they must've gotten them from the dress-up closet.
EVERY SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE THOSE, I'M JUST SAYING.
They looked...nice? They didn't look like bullies, but they didn't look like the friendly type either. Especially the boy with the wet, curly blonde locks. There was just something about him... even looking at him made him feel a little unsure. No, it would be better if he stayed here and read his book.
"No, t-thank you."
"You don't wanna be my friend?"
"What? No, of course, I wanna be your friend... I think. I just don't feel like playing with them. They might not like the idea of me walking over and busting in their game. I don't want to interrupt." Chuta's voice got quieter as time went on, getting to the point where Wataru had to lean closer to hear him.
"They won't mind, honest! C'mon, let me introduce you to Henry. Or do you wanna meet Jake? Then again, Ava is the perfect person for a beginner in the S.T.A.R. Ranger group..." Wataru said, tapping his chin.
"Wataru, no thanks. I don't want to play, I just want to sit here." Chuta said, asserting a bit of dominance into his words. It felt weird since he rarely did it, but he really wanted to get his point across. He panicked slightly when Wataru gave him an unamused look. God damn, his eyebrows...
"Ugh...FINE! That's so boring, though. Can we at least talk? 'Cause I like to talk."
"No kidding..."
"I'm a special kid. Now, put that book down so we can talk. Do you like pizza?" Wataru asked, lying on the ground to look at the clouds. He put the spare candy in his pocket. Chuta slowly did the same.
"Y-yeah. Pizza's good. We don't eat a lot because my dad says it costs too much."
"$7.99? Doesn't seem much to me. Grown-ups are weird." Wataru said, brushing an itch away from his nose. "Darn flies, tryin' to get up my nose..."
"Gross!" Chuta grimaced.
"Well, they are!"
"Wataru! Come play with us, you're supposed to drive the ship!"
The two boys sat up at the sound of a female voice. A short-haired brunette stood in the of them, her golden bracelet covered hands on her hips. She did look genuinely nice, Chuta had to admit. She had soft green eyes that were staring intensely at his new friend, her freckles going upwards with her cheek as she smiled. She was actually kind of pretty.
"Mmm, not right now, Ava. I'm talking to my new friend. His name is Chuta." Wataru said, jerking his thumb at Chuta. He gave Ava a diminutive wave. "H-hi."
Ava waved back. "Hello. Now, Wataru, if you don't play, then who's gonna be the captain? It can't be Henry, it can't be." she pleaded.
"You can be captain then, Ava. Tell the team that I'm battling a huge space cracken, and I won't be back for a while."
"But you didn't bring your laser gun!"
"I don't need my laser gun, I have a lightsaber. An explosive one, too. Anyone that touches it goes KABOOM!" Wataru yelled, holding his arms out as wide as possible, getting a laugh out of his two bystanders.
"Silly, you can't bring Star Wars weapons on a Star Trigon mission!"
"It's my team, so they can bring whatever they want. Now, run off, Ms.Grace. The team awaits." Wataru ordered with a salute. Chuta looked at him in awe. Did he really have a lightsaber? Man, he hoped so.
Just as Ava began to speak, the bell rang. Instantly, the playground was filled with the sounds of terrified screams at the dreadful noise, knowing that it meant that they had to suffer for three more hours. Some students even tried to jump over the fence to avoid jail.
"Kuso, recess is over!" Wataru brooded, standing up. Ava, who was your average, Disney Channel movie female nerd, rushed to the building.
"She's pretty," Chuta commented, bouncing up like a frog. Wataru cast him a glare.
"Hey, watch it. She's mine."
"O-okay?"
Once again, dem eyebrows.
"Let's go, Chuta. You can sit by me today." Wataru offered, grabbing Chuta's arm and dragging him away. He barely had a second to grab his book.
"I thought that girl sat next to you?" Chuta questioned, feeling the flow leave his arm.
"Amy? I'll ask her to move. She just can't say no to me. She'll get it, you're my new friend."
(I'm bored so I'll just do 30 days of one shots)
