"Wanna go see Miss Laurel?" Papa told me as he was getting ready to go out. I perked up a little bit. I still didn't get Ice cream. "I'll get you some ice cream?"
I then nodded excitedly. I got up off the bay window where I was playing with a few dolls Mister Walter gave me. I went to the nightstand and opened the first drawer to see my very few piles of clothes. I put on a shirt and pants with help from Papa. Papa also had to help me put my boots on.
We stopped at the store to buy ice cream. I couldn't get over the fact that there were so many different flavors.
We knocked on the door, I could hear music coming from Miss Laurel's apartment. I was holding the ice cream in a brown bag. Papa was looking down at me as I was looking at the ice cream. When Miss Laurel opened the door, she looked mad.
"Hey. Are you okay?" Pappa asked her as he looked up. "there are two cop cars outside."
"How am I supposed to stay away from you, if you won't stay away from me?" Miss Laurel told Papa. She looked down and saw me, a smile now on her face. "What are you doing here, Olle? Hi, Lizzie."
"My sister took... She pointed out to me that I have been distant since I got back and that... it would probably be a good idea if we let somebody in," Papa told her. I handed Papa the ice cream bag and walked up to Miss Laurel and gave her a signal that I wanted up. She smiled and picked me up.
"So, you thought you'd start with the first person you push away," Miss Laurel told him after she picked me up.
"I did that to protect you," Papa told her and I rolled my eyes, but nobody noticed. "And then I saw you yesterday and I realized that I hurt you."
Miss Laurel sighed and opened the door further to let him in. Papa slowly walked in and told her thank you as he walked to the living room. Miss Laurel looked at me then at Papa. Miss Laurel closed the door and followed Papa.
"Wow. This place hasn't changed in five years," Papa pointed out as he looked around. I was looking around in awe, I've never been in here.
"I haven't really had the time to redecorate," Miss Laurel said a little sassily as she walked over to the couch and put me down.
"I'm a jerk," Papa said as he stood in the doorway from the entrance and the living room. I giggle at how pointedly he said it. "Before the island, I was jerk... and now I'm just a... I'm a damaged jerk," Papa told her truthfully. I looked down at my hands, wondering if I was damaged. Or if I was ever not damaged.
"What's in the bag?" Miss Laurel asked, her arms crossed, anger written all over her.
"I thought about many things on the island, but there was one thing that I thought about every day," Papa told her as he was opening the bag. I looked up and saw him taking out the ice cream. I clapped my hands. "I actually dreamed about it and I promised myself, and Lizzie. That if I ever do it again... I'd do it with you." Papa pulled out the ice cream, and I grew more excited. A small smile appeared on Miss Laurel's face. "Eat ice cream."
"This is as good as I remember," Papa said as he looked up to Miss Laurel. Papa handed me the ice cream and I smiled like a crazy person at it. I was sitting on Papa's lap as he sat on the floor and Miss Laurel was on the couch. "My mother wants me to join the company," Papa told her, I still didn't fully understand what that meant, but Miss Laurel seemed to get it because she looked up in a little annoyance. "Yeah. Take my rightful place."
"I can't exactly picture you as master of the universe," Miss Laurel joked. Papa looked to me; I wasn't really paying attention to them as I was trying to wat the mint ice cream.
