"Jeremiah is in his study."
"Thank you Karen."
It had been days since they started gathering everything for the wedding. She was holding the invitation in her hand. She gently knocked on the wall. Jeremiah lifted his head and the brightest that broke her heart formed on his face.
"Beautiful! It is always such a pleasure to get a visit from you!"
Mercedes couldn't smile. Jeremiah stood worried.
"Is everything okay...?"
Mercedes sighed. She slowly walked up to his desk.
"I'm afraid this visit isn't really going to be a pleasant one for you..."
He noticed the envelope in her hand.
"What is that?"
Mercedes slowly reached her hand out.
"It's for you..."
She watched Jeremiah open the envelope and his expression changed.
"So.. you really are going to marry my brother..."
Mercedes sighed.
"You deserved to know.... You don't have to come... I don't why I even gave you that instead of just telling you... It's stupid.. but you deserved to know..."
Jeremiah nodded and threw the invitation on the desk.
"Well thanks for telling me."
He set back at his desk and Mercedes stood there unsure of what to say. He slowly lifted his eyes.
"What do you want me to say to you?"
"I don't know... I just didn't want you to find out from someone else... Jeremiah I never meant..."
He stood up from his desk.
"I know... If there is nothing more you need, I am very busy.. Thank you for your visit.."
Mercedes stepped back.
"No... that's all.. I'll just go now..."
Mercedes walked slowly down the hallways. Ecco must have been doing her own thing somewhere in the bunker.
"You're leaving so soon?"
Mercedes stopped and smiled.
"Yeah... I have to get back home Karen.."
"Jeremiah will understand one day. Do not worry. Remeber our talk?"
Mercedes nodded still smiling.
"Yes. I know you have my back. Thank you.."
Mercedes walked slower through the woods than she usually did. She enjoyed the trees and the birds. Mercedes set on the ground. All she could see was her brother. She wanted to cry, but felt she wasn't aloud to.
"You'd be so ashamed of me... what kind of person have I become...? I'm such a horrible person.."
Mercedes looked up at the sky. When she looked back down, her eyes landed on a camera in a tree. It was moving and focusing in on her. She sighed knowing that Jeremiah was watching her. She thought about the conversation she had with Karen. She knew that for now, she had to pick up the piece of shit that was herself and keep moving forward.
It was dark by the time she got back to the apartment. She walked in and TaTyana was sitting on the couch with Ed.
"Where is he...?"
Ed looked away from the tv.
"He went to go get food."
Mercedes nodded.
"Well.. I'm going to bed... I'm not really hungry.."
TaTyana set up.
"Are you okay..?"
"I just... I just don't feel good.. tell Jerome I'll eat what he brought home tomorrow.. I just really don't feel up to it right now..."
Mercedes stripped down to her underwear and slipped on one of her own t-shirts. She laid in bed staring at the dresser. The exact drawer she knew the pistol was in. She shook her head and closed her eyes tightly. She thought one clear fact to herself.
"The stuff I have been through... is not an excuse to be a shitty person..."
Jerome got back not too long after she fell asleep. He walked to his bedroom in an attempt to get her to come eat. She was passed out. He stared at her angry. He understood everything she went through and how easily it is to get lost, but she had been walking around with this more holy than God attitude. She was no longer that sweet and innocent girl he kidnapped. She got bigger than she could handle. Jerome walked over to the dresser. He slowly pulled out the pistol. He turned around and aimed it straight at her head. A part of him was saying that he should just pull the trigger. He could kill her and this would all be over. He could then kill TaTyana and Ed. He knew how to get rid of the bodies. He slowly walked up to the bed and held the gun close to her head. Frustrated, Jerome threw the pistol at the wall. Luckily it didn't go off. He stood close to the bed staring at Mercedes. She never budged.
"It is so fucking stupid that I can't just kill you. Love is such fucking bullshit! I love you more than anything, but if you just also knew how much I fucking hate you!"
He brushed her hair out of her face. He leaned down and kissed her cheek. He punched a hole in the wall as he walked out of the bedroom. He walked back into the kichen.
"She's passed out. It's okay. I'll just put her food in the fridge."
Jerome cleaned up from dinner and quietly walked to his room. Mercedes was still passed out. He pulled off his shirt and threw it the floor. He carefully crawled into bed. He turned to his side facing her. She had rolled over in her sleep. He left out a frustrated grunt as he pulled her close to him, wrapping his arms around her. He felt his stomach get warm. Mercedes had wrapped herself around him. He played with her hair. He eventually closed his eyes and fell asleep.
