You and Newt push through the crowd of Gladers gathered around the Box. Alby is already waiting for it to come up. As you stand beside Newt, you realize you have no idea of what to do.

You hear gears turning and rumbling as the Box ascends. Minutes pass and you finally see the top of the Box racing to the surface. It arrives with a muffled boom.

The doors open and Newt leans over to peer into the Box. He jerks back, his eyes going wide. His eyebrows scrunch together in confusion.

"Another?" he breathes.

You and Alby lean forwards, peeking into the Box. A girl lays on the floor, seemingly lifeless. Black hair surrounds her deathly pale skin.

"No way," you breathe. You imagine blue eyes behind her lids and you know without a doubt that it's her. You lean over to Newt, whispering in his ear. "That's her. The girl I saw in the Changing."

"You sure?" he whispers back. "Do you think Tommy would recognize her?"

You shrug. You doubt it.

"Hold on!" Alby yells, silencing the Gladers. "Just hold on!"

"Well, what's wrong?" someone challenges.

"Two Newbies in two days," he mutters, standing up. "Now this. Two years, hardly anything different, now this."

Dead. That's all you can think of. Dead. Why would they send a dead body to the Glade?

"Just tell us!" someone yells.

"Y/n was a surprise, it can't be much worse! I mean... um... much more."

Snickering breaks out among the others. If you weren't so shocked yourself, you would have laughed along with them.

"You shanks shut up!" Alby yells. "Tell them, Newt."

"It's a girl," he starts. A few murmurs break out in the crowd. "And she's dead."

Silence.
