Thomas Michael Wachowski was not expecting to wake up on a sunny Saturday morning with Sonic and Maddie Wachowki jumping on him like two elementary school girls having a sleepover.

"Wake up, Tom! It's time to make the donuts!" Sonic jumped on top of the human, lying there for a moment before shaking him vigorously.

"No way," Tom grumbled and pulled the blanket over his head, taking Sonic along with it.

Holding in a giggle, Sonic slowly pulled back the blanket as if tiptoeing, whispering in a singsong voice, "Tom, don't you know what today is?"

"No, Sonic, I do not—" He did— "Is it Saturday?"

Sonic clapped his hands together. "It's your birthday! Happy, happy birthday, Donut Lord!"

"No, no," Tom pulled himself out of bed and rubbed his face, but smiled at the young boy's excitement nonetheless. "I specifically remember. My birthday was last year."

"Jokes on you," Sonic leapt into Tom's face, their noses just centimeters from touching, "birthdays are an annual thing." He tapped the human's nose and then leapt off the bed, heading out the door, and rushed to the kitchen. From said location, he shouted over his shoulder, "Come on, you slowpokes!"

Maddie kissed her husband on the lips. "You are not gonna believe what cake he picked out for you."

"Better not be Frozen themed, I swear—"

"Thomas!" Lightly, she slapped him.  The colored woman laughed and kissed him again. "No, trust me. You'll love it so much, you won't want to eat it."

"We'll see about that." Tom slipped on socks and hurried down the steps with Maddie following close behind, hearing Sonic's quiet giggles in the kitchen.

"Oh, oh! Ozzie, here he comes!"

Tom shook his head with a smile and walked in the kitchen, finding Sonic sitting on the counter in the lotus position, a white box sitting in front of him.

"Ta-da!" Sonic did jazz hands. "Happy birthday, Tom!"

Tom couldn't help but grin and slowly, for dramatic effect, he took his time opening the box. When he did, a gasp escaped his lips and a hand inadvertently went to his heart.

The cake was a regular-sized circular cake, only it was in the shape of a donut with a hole in the middle and everything. It was vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting that was a pale pink and speckled in multicolored sprinkles like an actual donut. Along the circumference, "Happy Birthday Donut Lord!!!" was written in yellow cursive.

Sonic cocked his head to the side with a grin at Tom's silence. "So! You like it?"

He was at a loss for words, mouth opened to speak but with muted volume. Eventually, after a chuckle and hand to his chest, he managed, "Like it? I love it! You picked this?"

"I did," answered the hedgehog, looking up at Tom proudly with his handsome smile.

"I love it so much... I-I really don't want to eat it. It's so beautiful."

"Too bad! We're eating it." Sonic spun around to grab a knife, which Maddie had bolted over to the drawer with a forced smile.

"Ha, nice try." She pulled out a cake knife before he could and walked over to Tom, offering it to him.

"Maaaaaddie! I wanna cut the cake!" whined Sonic as he dropped his chin in his palms with a curled lip, pouting.

"You can cut the cake on your birthday," promised Tom, beginning to cut the cake into slices. Maddie handed her husband a plate and he plopped the first slice on, licking the frosting off his fingers. He then served Maddie and Sonic and they began to dig in.

"Oh! My! Lord! This cake—" Tom proceeded to stuff his mouth with said decadent— "should be illegal for how good it is."

"W-What?!" Sonic gasped, taking his words far too seriously. "You can't arrest Jessica!"

"Who?" Tom had icing all over his face and Sonic almost laughed.

"Jessica! The lady who made the cake at the bakery!" Sonic zipped down and wrapped his arms around the human's leg. "You can't arrest her, she's too cool to go to jail!"

"Sonic, it's a joke!" Tom proclaimed with a mouth full of donut-shaped birthday cake.

"Oh," he chuckled nervously, "okay, good because I would have to fight you." He hummed after taking a bite of his cake.

"I would win."

"Not-uh!"

When their frosted-covered breakfast was over, Sonic leapt from the counter to Tom's back, catching the cop off-guard, and climbed to his shoulders, situating himself up there and hugged the human's head.

"So, old man, what are we doin' today on your special day?"

"Dunno about you, but I'm going back to bed." Tom plucked the hedgehog off of him and placed him on the floor, marching up the stairs.

"What?!" Sonic stomped his foot. "Back to bed?! Absolutely not!" He ran (at a human speed) up the stairs and spread out his arms and legs before the bedroom door, preventing Tom from getting in. "It's your birthday! That means something special needs to happen."

Tom sighed, "Sonic, when you're old like me, you don't get special things anymore. You're a kid, you have plenty of time."

"Thomas, that's not true," Sonic growled and jabbed a finger at the human. "Age doesn't matter. It shouldn't. It's your day and you can do whatever you want!"

"And I want to go back to sleep."

Sonic gasped. "No way! I won't let you."

"Little one," the cop put his hands on his hips, exhaling hard enough that his short bangs drifted, "Would you please let me in my room?"

"Nope," Sonic folded his arms over his chest.

Maddie chuckled as she ventured up the stairs to see the cause of Sonic's shouting. She leaned against the railing with that smile of hers, looking to both her son and her husband.

"Well, since apparently you're the boss now, what do you want to do so badly?" she questioned.

"I dunno. I just want Tom to feel special. Because you are! Tom, you're an old man, but you're special and I just want you to be happy!" Sonic's face went pink, not comfortable with expressing his feelings quite yet, and he looked at the floor in his chagrin.

Tom blushed as well. "Duly noted."

Unexpectedly, however, he scooped the hedgehog up from under his armpits and then carried him to the bedroom with him, Maddie following behind. The three of them curled up in bed and snuggled together, turning on the tv, and watched Saturday morning cartoons.

"Hey, Tom," Sonic whispered in his ear.

"What?"

"Happy birthday, you big drip."
