I’ve lived in London for three months now. I thought it’d be great, but honestly it was all a blur.

Dad  was home less often, which was understandable. Work was great, but also mentally draining. Luckily, it was Thanksgiving week and there were no classes at all, meaning no work.

It was Monday afternoon, and I was eating cereal in the living room, watching old reruns of Courage the Cowardly Dog on Netflix. My dad came into the room wearing a suit and had a luggage bag with him.

“Alex, I’m going on a business trip. I don’t know if I’ll make it back on Thanksgiving,” he said as he fixed his neck tie.

I muted the TV and put the bowl down on the coffee table. “What? Dad!”

“I’m sorry honey. It’s really important, but I’ll try to make it back for dinner.” He walked over to me and kissed the top of my forehead.

I rolled my eyes and watched as my dad left the room, hearing the front door shut seconds later.

“Wow,” I muttered to myself. I continued on watching the program and eating my cereal. Muriel was getting kidnapped… again. The space chickens took her, and though I’ve seen this episodes more times than I have blinked in my entire life, I watched it as if I didn’t know what was going to happen.

I heard my text alert go off, but I ignored it. Unfortunately, whoever was texting me was ignoring the fact that I was ignoring their text and continued to blow up my phone. Finally, they called me and I picked up.

“Whoever this is, it better be important because you are interrupting my Courage marathon,” I said. I heard laughter on the other line and I knew it was Joe.

“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to disturb you.”

“Well, you did. Now what do you want?”

“I just wanted to tell you that I saw the man that took Zoe! Or well, the man in the van. I don’t know where he’s headed, but it was definitely him.”

“Joe! That’s great! What are you going to do now?”

“Alfie and I tried following him, but we lost it. But we’ve got the license plate, and we’ll find him again.”

“That’s just amazing Joe. I’m so happy that you guys are almost there.”

“Thank you. I’ll let you get back to your program now-“

“Wait!” I stopped him. I bit my lip nervously.

                “Yeah?”

“Are you busy on Thursday?” I asked him.

                “You mean Thanksgiving?”

“Yeah. Do you have any plans?”

There was silence for a moment. “No. Caspar went back to South Africa again to be with his family. And my parents, well they can’t stand to be in the same room together, so I don’t really spend it with them. Usually I spend it with Alfie and Zoe and some other friends…” he trailed off.
