“Please eat,” Joe said. He came in fifteen minutes ago with another sandwich in his hand. Instead of just dropping it off, he set it on the bedside table and sat on the chair.
I ignored him-and my grumbling stomach. I didn’t want to eat, especially after knowing that he drugged my drink yesterday night. Who knows what may be in this delicious looking sandwich?
“Alex, you can’t go forever without eating,” he said, still trying to persuade me to eat.
“Well, a girl can try,” I said sarcastically, squinting at his words. I was lying down, facing the wall. At least I knew that he had no plan to hurt or kill me, since he “needed” me to tell him where my dad “hid” Zoe.
“I promise there isn’t anything wrong with this sandwich. This isn’t healthy.”
There he goes again! I thought. I wanted to reply with how keeping someone captive also wasn’t healthy, and that the stress and depression building inside me wasn’t healthy, but I kept back. (And look at that, repressing emotions also wasn’t healthy.)
“You think I’m going believe that?” I scoffed.
“Look!” he said. I turned around and saw him take a bite of the sandwich. He chewed it quickly and swallowed. “Believe me now?”
“Well now my sandwich has a bite taken out of it. Thanks,” I told him. He grunted.
“You’re so hard headed!” He threw his hands up in the air.
“Let me go and you’ll never have to deal with me again,” I replied. I took the sandwich and took a bite. At the taste my stomach grumbled louder, wanting to be fed quicker. I obliged and ate more of it, my stomach thanking me as it traveled down.
“Not until we find Zoe.”
“You’re not going to find her if you’re so focused on holding me hostage and accusing my father of being a kidnapper and ring holder of young girls.”
Joe shook his head. “There’s no reason for me to make this up. I’ve been looking for months trying to find Zoe. Do you think I have time to waste making false accusations? And do you think I wanted it to be your dad? Alex, I really like you and I wouldn’t want this, but Zoe is my sister!”
I stopped midway, my mouth hanging agape inches away from a half-eaten sandwich. I placed it back on the plate and set it on the table.
“Don’t tell me you like me and then keep me here. You hurt me, accused my father of a serious crime, and took me away from my life. So don’t you dare say you like me,” I spat the words. Inside they were warming, in some crazy way, but I knew better than to let my emotions take the better of me. I wasn’t going to let him see what I actually felt. The feelings that should have left the moment I realized he had taken me away.
“I hope one day we can move past this Alex. I really do.” And with that, he got up and left the room. I heard the familiar click of the lock and the room seemed to drop in temperature.
The half-eaten sandwich stared at me from the table. My stomach was still calling out for it, but I had no more appetite for it. I don’t think I would be able to hold it down anyways, since the conversation made me feel sick. Sick and fade.
