My head lolled to the side for the hundredth time already. The guys have been in there for a while, and I was really bored. But finally, they came back unharmed… but also with no girls.
Joe was the first to make it back to the car where he un-cuffed me and helped me to my feet. He just shook his head, signaling that this wasn’t the place where my dad held the girls.
As the day continued on and we went to each location, the boys got quieter and more irritable. I watch Joe scratch names off lists and every so often he would turn around and ask if there were any more places to look. Sadly, I disappointed him every time.
“We’ve been out for nearly ten hours and been to all of these places that we were supposed to go to, and nothing. And all the others too. I don’t understand!” Alfie pounded his hands on the steering wheel.
I stayed silent. Since the first time they came back this morning I decided to just listen to them. I didn’t leave the car and I just made sure everything was okay when they got back. They weren’t since they always came back empty handed, but they continued to move forward.
“What are we going to do now? There aren't any more places to look!” Alfie continued. He was looking straight in front of him, where Marcus was by his car, kicking its back tire.
I let out a frustrated sigh. “I’m sorry. I thought this would all finally end. I just don’t understand how they haven’t been found yet. My dad doesn’t own any-“ I was cut off by the sound of my phone going off. I looked at the caller id; unknown number.
“H-hello?” I croaked as I answered the call.
“Hello Alex,” I heard the devil himself talk on the other side.
“Dad,” I said stiffly. Joe and Alfie turned around and I put my phone on speaker.
“Are you enjoying your little goose chase?”
“Dad, where are the girls? We’ve looked everywhere. It doesn’t make sense for them to be gone,” I hissed through my teeth.
“Oh, do you think I’d be sane enough to leave them where I knew you would find them? Have you forgotten that I have people, and that I said this was a family business?”
I was dumb founded by this question. “What do you mean family business? We don’t have any family!”
My dad chuckled, and I could imagine him wiggling a finger tauntingly. “That’s where you’re wrong. I’ve just never told you we had family. You would have found out once we left yesterday, but Dexter had to go and ruin everything.”
My heart felt like it had been struck at the mention of Dexter’s name. “Where is Dexter?”
“He’s been taken care of.”
I let out a cry before I calmed myself down. “What do you mean? You didn’t kill him did you?”
“Honey, that’s not the way I work. He’s very much alive, just gone. Off somewhere. But this is not why I called.”
“Then tell me why,” I said. Joe and Alfie were practically on the edge of their seats.
“I’d like to make you an offer. And Joe and Alfie, I hope you both are listening,” I glanced up at them and they seemed uncomfortable by the fact that my dad knew they were there. “I’ll let go of all the girls. I’ll set them free and they can all go back to their normal lives, including Zoe,” he paused. The look on Joe’s and Alfie’s faces were so bright it made the day seem not so bad. “But, Alex, you’re coming back with me.”
