Chapter 12: Teresa's POV

Summary: Jane and Lisbon contemplate the "what ifs" of the current situation.

What do I tell Annie? Do I call my brothers? I don't know the first thing about raising a kid. Annie was almost seventeen, this was gonna be harder than raising my brothers or a 'kid'.

"I'll help you." Jane's voice brought me back to reality, "You're scared and rightfully so, but you don't have to do this alone."

"I can't ask you to do that Patrick," it felt good using his first name, right almost, "I don't want being around Annie to remind you of the past."

"I offered." He replied as he pulled into the school parking lot, "Maybe it'll bring back some painful memories but it's something I've become accustomed to. Circuses, beaches, children, ice cream, the color red, luxury homes, happy couples, the all remind me of Charlotte and Angela. I built up these walls after they..." He never actually says 'died', "I didn't let anyone try and scale them until you came along. You've made me a better man and helped me to heal. I guess the next logical step would be integrating me into a family." It was ironic how much I could say the same thing to him, "We could be a family. You, me, and Annie."

It was sweet, it really was. He was ready to move on. And it's not like I never thought about a future with him but this was all wrong. This isn't how Patrick and I were supposed to come together. Not how we were supposed to fall in love or start a life and a family together. None of it was right, all because a son-of-a-bitch wants to ruin our lives for enjoyment.

"I hope not." I finally say, "If we're a family that means Annie loses her father."

We both got ou of the car and walked into the school, both of us thinking about the deeper meaning to what we had said.
