"something wrong, ma'am?"

______

1943

Winnie jolted awake from the sound of the boat's horn going off, sitting up straight from shock. The smell of sweat and smoke filled her lungs making her gag. At first, she didn't know where she was until the girl remembered the events from what happened about six days ago.

The night Winnie left, she said goodbye to Steve, the Barnes family (excluding Bucky of course), and Evelyn. She promised them all that she would write to them and to Steve and the Barnes', she promised she would look after Bucky and keep a good eye on him.

"Be careful out there, Wins. And please make sure Bucky doesn't do something stupid like getting himself killed." Steve begged clutching her goodbye.

"I promise, Stevie."

The memory of seeing their faces for the last time brought a tear to her eye but she quickly rubbed it away knowing that crying was not the answer here.

Many people were surrounding the White girl, men and women ranging from all different ages and they were all cramped up in this small boat. It was such a tight squeeze that Winnie could hear the heartbeat of the people sitting next to her. And to make matters worse, there had been a few incidents of seasickness. Some of the people looked way too young and pure for the horrors that were about to come to them all.

Winnie had met a few of the other nurses that would be working in the camp and surprisingly, she wasn't the youngest of the ones she met, no that name went to a young girl who was only twenty-one called Alice. The White girl could tell from the fear in her eyes that she hadn't signed up voluntarily. Winnie felt bad for the girl and made a silent oath to herself to look after the younger one.

Thankfully for everyone on the boat, the horn that went off that woke Winnie from her slumber was the signal that they had finally reached England. Normally it took seven days to get there but because of luck, they had been able to get there earlier.

One of the crew members on the ship instructed everyone to grab their belongings and follow the signs that would then lead them to land. Quickly, Winnie grabbed her suitcase and stood up just like everyone else and followed the woman standing in front of her.

When she got outside, Winnie couldn't help herself but look around the familiar land that had once been her home. It had been so long since she had been here and she missed it. The way that the green lands went on for miles and tall trees that made up many beautiful forests. But now looking at it, it wasn't as beautiful as she remembered it. Now it was just gloomy - not in the way it was when it was raining - no this was different. The sky had a forever grey and foggy look over it and the sun was nowhere to be seen. The sight made Winnie gasp at how something so beautiful can look like this.
