chapter v.

1934

J A M E S

EVER SINCE THE DAY HE MET WINNIE WHITE, JAMES BARNES COULD NOT STOP THINKING ABOUT HER. Everything she did stick in his head. The way she moved, how she spoke, her face, her personality, absolutely everything. He wanted to get to know her more, he wanted to know everything about her. It was almost as if she was a drug and he was severely addicted to it.

Bucky didn't know what it was about her, he had never had this problem with anyone before. To him, Winnie was perfect; completely and utterly perfect. She couldn't do anything wrong. When he looks at her, his heart would pound and he turned into this nervous wreck, afraid that he was going to do something wrong. He would always brush it off as nothing but deep down he knew it was anything but that.

It's not that he was embarrassed by his feelings. The Barnes boy was very open about having an interest in women and was often very flirty when he came across someone he found attractive, hence why he was one of the popular guys in school. It was very often that Bucky had girls swooning over him. But this, with Winnie, he didn't want to be so open about it. His feelings towards the girl were much different than the feelings he'd had in the past and since it didn't feel the same, he refused to believe he actually liked her like that.

She was a friend. That's it.

However, his actions didn't go unnoticed by a certain best friend called Steve Rogers. Ever since Bucky first met Winnie, he had been acting a lot happier than he did before. At first, it confused him as to why he was acting so joyful but after learning that he had met a new 'dame' as Bucky put it, he had a hunch that his buddy had a little thing for the new girl.

After meeting Winnie, Steve knew his hunch wasn't just a feeling but rather the truth. For the past few weeks, the Rogers boy had watched his childhood friend, taking note of the way he acted around her. Steve knew Winnie was no ordinary girl to Bucky. The way he would look at her was completely different to the other girls he had looked at before, instead, Bucky would look at Winnie as if she was a shooting star, completely mesmerised by her appearance.

Steve could also see in Winnie that she reciprocated some of the feelings Bucky had for the girl. He could tell with her cheeks glowing red every time he complimented her or whenever he would touch her playfully on the arm.

It was so painfully obvious that the two liked each other and Steve wished that they would realise it. So, to speed up the process, he decided to mention it to his best friend.

"So... How's Winnie?" he asked, trying to be sly about it. "I thought she was supposed to be studying with us."

The two friends were at the Rogers residence studying for an upcoming test that they all had. Their work was sprawled all across Steve's floor, barely touched due to the high level of procrastination that had gone on.

"Yeah, she just couldn't make it today," Bucky sighed, furrowing a brow. "I went to her house this morning and she told me that she had to help her Father clean. Something was off though."

The Barnes boy did in fact go to her house that very morning to see if she wanted to join them. When he knocked on the door, he noticed the way Winnie's hazel eyes widened as she realised who it was. She was quick to usher him out of the tenement block, telling him that she had lots of chores to do and that was that. He barely had a chance to get a word in or fully take in her appearance.
