"what if she says no?"

______

1943

Today was the day that Winnie White was going to be going into the front lines. She had informed the Colonel just before nine pm about her decision and to say he was glad would be a valid answer. However, she had requested that she would be with Sergeant Barnes as much as she could. Philips was reluctant to let the two be together, afraid that they would let their emotions get the better of them but after a long debate with the girl, he finally allowed her to be with him.

The whole night before, the girl couldn't sleep, too afraid of what was going to happen in the morning and the days to come. Would she die in battle? Or worse would she have to watch the man she loved die in front of her eyes? Her thoughts shocked her to her core and she couldn't shake them off.

Now here she was at five in the morning, standing alongside her boyfriend and many of the people she had grown to call her friends. She worried about each and every one of them and prayed that they would all survive the war, even though she knew how horrible and unpredictable this event is. At any moment, one of them could be shot and killed, just like that.

Winnie stood in between Bucky and Gabe, the two men both carried guns and wore identical outfits and helmets. The White girl wore a nurse's outfit that had been stained and coloured into camouflage and a helmet like the men's.

"Right soldiers-" Colonel Philips began but was cut off by Winnie clearing her throat in annoyance. A few of them sniggered a little bit, including Bucky and Gabe. "-And nurse. You lot will be going into enemy lines to try take out a few of those Nazis, you got that?" Everyone nodded their heads. "Good. Watch your back, shoot the enemy and don't get killed."

The White girl took in a deep breath and pressed her eyes shut, the fear of dying running through her body. Bucky noticed her fear so he entwined his hand with her's, giving it a tight squeeze. Winnie opened her eyes to look at the boy. She gave the Barnes boy a tight smile, which he returned.

They both knew what might happen out there, they both knew how high the chance of death was but they both knew that they would get through this together, that they weren't alone. If something were to happen, at least they would have each other.

"Ready, Nurse White?" the Barnes boy asked with a small smile.

Winnie nodded her head. "More than ever, Sergeant Barnes." The girl went up on her tippy-toes and gave Bucky a kiss on the lips.

At the sound of someone letting out a groan, the couple broke apart and turned round to face Gabe who was standing there, rolling his eyes so hard Winnie thought that they would be able to roll out of his head. "Enough of the PDA you two, we get it, you're in love," he joked.
