chapter xii.

"i'll go and you stay with steve"

"MY mom just died."

Winnie felt her heart drop. Those words circled Winnie's head, her jaw dropping. She felt like she was gonna throw up. The White girl had only experienced losing a loved one once when she was nine and even to this day it still hurt.

Both Bucky and Winnie stood up from the booth and made their way over to the Rogers boy. Winnie engulfed the boy in a hug, slightly towering him. Steve hesitated slightly before excepting the hug and burrowing his head in the crook of her neck. She could feel a slight wetness on her shirt from his tears but she didn't care.

She looked up at Bucky when she felt his hand on her shoulder, his face filled with pain. Mrs Rogers was like an aunt to Bucky and it hurt his heart to know that she was gone. If he was feeling this much pain he could only assume that Steve was in agony.

Bucky shifted around uncomfortably as he noticed a few of the customers staring at them. The White girl sensed his shift and knitting her brow together in confusion until she too noticed people staring.

"Let's get out of here, go somewhere private," Winnie suggested breaking away from the hug and looking straight into Steve's glossy eyes. Just looking at him made her heart break. She wished she could just take all his pain away and replace it with happiness.

Steve didn't meet her eye, just nodded in agreement. She grabbed his hand and squeezed it before leading him out the door. Bucky stayed behind and went to go pay the woman for the meals but she said it was on the house. He thanked her before he too left the diner and not looking back.

The Barnes boy jogged a little bit to catch up with his friends, putting an arm around Steve's shoulder comfortingly. He hated seeing his friend upset, in fact it pained him to his core.

"They w-want m-m-me to go d-down to th-the hosp-hospital.." Steve's voice cracking a lot throughout the sentence. He felt Winnie give his hand another squeeze making him look up at her for the first time.

"If you want to go, we'll be right there with you," she reassured him with a smile.

Steve looked between his friends, a ghost of a smile on his lips. "Thank you guys, really. I don't think I can go down there."

Bucky squeezed his shoulder. "That's fine, one of us can stay with you and the other will go to the hospital for you," he suggested, looking towards Winnie to see her opinion to which she nodded. The Rogers boy nodded too and looked back down to the ground.
