December 23rd
My birthday.
I do my everyday examination in the mirror. My long sleeve sweater is long enough to cover my scars and cuts thankfully. No one knows about them and I plan on keeping it that way.
No one wished me a happy birthday at school, except for Casey, and my science and social studies teacher.
In the morning, I walked into my social studies class and I was the first one there, so no one heard Mr. Brown say happy birthday to me. The same happened with Mrs. Mollie, my science teacher.
When it was my lunch period, walked up to my locker, just like normal. When I was about to get to my locker, while trying to shuffle through the crowd, I hear a loud, obnoxious screech. I didn't know whether to run away or keep going to my locker, but no one else was running away so I kept pushing my way to my locker to find out. When I get to my locker, I finally see why that girl screamed.
Christian. Christian was why.
There standing in front of my locker with a sign in his hands was the one and only Christian Abridge. In the midst of processing what was going on I cover my face with my hands in shock. I look back up to see if it was all true. It was. Then I noticed something, the sign in his hands.
Will you be my girlfriend Kayla Riley?
He just kept smiling as he watched me read it. The answer was obvious to me. "Yes! Yes! A million times yes!" I don't care that there are hundreds of eyes on me. I don't care what they think of me as I run into Christians arms and jump. He catches me like he always has and spins me around. I hear a girl near us scream, "Oh my gosh they're soo cute!"
I can't help but smile as Christian puts his lips to mine and we move our lips in sync to one another.
Usually, we aren't allowed to kiss, hug, hold hands, or show any public displays of affection in school, but the teachers never come out into the hallways. "Happy birthday, Kayla," he charmingly smiles while placing me down. "Thank you so much," I manage to say through the tears. "I am taking you home for the day," he proceeds to pulling me by the arm away from my locker, through that crowd, "I have a surprise for you," he adds. "but I need an adult to get me out of school," I remind him. "Yeah, your moms in the office," he keeps pulling. "wait I have to get my stuff from my locker,"
I go to my locker and quickly pack up my stuff and we go down to the office.
My mom already has me signed out at the office and we get into the car.
"Where are we going," I childishly ask. "where is the second place in this world where I saw you,"
"New York City!?" I basically scream. He nods his head and my mom laughs. "Oh my gosh this is the best birthday ever!"
It turns out my mom was driving us to the city. She was going to be doing some shopping while Christian and I did whatever Christian had planed.
When we arrived in the city my mom parked the car in some parking garage and paid.
"For your first surprise, we will...." he says pulling something out of his pocket, "we're going to see the Lion King," he pulls out two tickets. "How did you know I have wanted to see that!" I yell in shock. "Your mom," he simply answers, "well we have to go get lunch first, I made reservation already at the Hard Rock Café. Is that okay with you?"
"That's perfect," I say and I actually mean it. For once I don't care what the world thinks of me, I am Christian Akridge's girlfriend. We get to the restaurant and are soon seated at a table next to a large image of Whitney Houston. The waiter gives us menus and takes our order for drinks. After a few minutes, I decided what I wanted: The Big Cheese burger. Its been so long since I had a cheese burger and I can't help but imagine taking my first bite into one. I don't care anymore what my body image looks like, the only person who can judge me about my appearance is me, and I have chosen to change that judgment.
When the waiter comes to take our order I confidently say, "I'd like the Big Cheese burger,"
"Excellent choice," the waiter says while scribbling it down on his notepad. "That's my girl!" Christian cheers and fist pumps me from across the table. The waiter does laugh along with us because he just doesn't know how much of an accomplishment is it for me to eat a burger.
Its funny how one person can change your life so dramatically.
After our food came about 25 minutes later, I was finally face to face with a cheese burger. With no hesitation, my hands pick it up and I take my first bite. I don't remember anything ever tasting this good! "How is it?" Christian asks. "Amazing!" I answer, taking another bite.
"Kayla," he says, "I have another surprise for you," he says. It can get better than this? "What!?" I impatiently ask. "You'll see," he shrugs his shoulder. I look him dead in the eye and put the burger down, "don't do this to me,"
He just laughs it off and soon I am laughing too.
When I finish my burger and he is finished with his meal, we get the bill, he pays, and we leave the restaurant.
"Okay, now we have to go to the Minskoff Theatre," he says reading off the ticket. "We'll get a taxi," he says already making his way to the street to get one. When we get one he tells the taxii driver, "Minskoff Theatre," the mans replies with an "Okay" and we are on our way.
The drive was short, but I am glad we took a taxi because it feels like its below 0 degrees. Christian pays the driver and we get out of the vehicle. After waiting on a line for a short 20 minutes or so, we are in our seat and we have a few minutes till the show is supposed to start.
A lady gets on the loud speaker and everyone gets quiet as the lights dim. "Greetings and welcome to the Minskoff Theatre! We thank you for coming to see The Lion King with us today! Please be courteous and silence all your cell phones. We ask that there are no videos or picture taken during the performance. Also a reminder that there should be no food or drinks in the theater. Thank you and please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!"
As soon as she's done talking the stage lights up and music starts playing. The scenery is breath-taking, it has been my dream to see this show for as long as I can remember. Its all just as I imagined it, and better! Christian take my hand in his and we lean up against one another while watching.
It just doesn't get better than this.

When the show is over we go back outside and now its about 7 at night and we are about to go home.
Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, so I am off for break until January 5th.
We have to meet my mom at the parking garage at 7:30 so we can be home at about 8:15. We take a taxi. When we get to the parking garage my mom is already heating up the car. "Hey! I was just about to call you! How was the Lion King?" she beams. "Really good! Better than I thought"
"That's awesome," she smiles as we load into the car. The car ride was longer because of the traffic since tomorrow is Christmas Eve. I didn't even realize that I fell asleep in the car and my head was resting on Christian's shoulder. I was shaken away when we were home and Christian and I went upstairs to my room.
"Remember when I said I had one more surprise," Christian smirks.
**A.N: for all of you who have a dirty mind, its not what you think!**
"What is it?" I curiously ask. As if this day could get any better, Christian replies: "I am staying here for the next month".
