I'm not going into much detail on how we reached the Dark Lord's throne room because we swore to never speak of it again. It was horrible. We fought powerful monsters like two horrible (yet beautiful) paintings, lots of demons, and a dragon! Somehow, we pressed on and saved three more of my companions.
But here we were, at the doors to the Dark Lord's throne room. And I had no appetite.
"C'mon (Y/N), eat something," Ava said. I had never bothered to learn my companion's names until now. Ava was our cleric, and we brought her everywhere because she was very good at healing.
"Okay," I said, taking a bite of roast griffin so she wouldn't fuss over me.
"If all goes well, you'll see Chris again today," she mentioned.
Ava was the only person I told about my feelings for Chris. But she didn't get it. That was all I had been thinking about for the past four weeks!
"Yeah," I replied, and lowered my voice, "Do you... really think he likes me?"
"Of course!" she responded, "He definitely likes you. Almost all the boys in our party do!"
"They do?" I said. I wasn't good at picking up feelings.
"You really think you're the only one whoe comes to me with their emotions?"
"I guess not."
Eager for a change of subject, I stood up and yelled, "Alright guys, let's kick some Dark Lord butt!"
My friends cheered, and we charged out of the inn and into the throne room. As my three companions readied their weapons, the Dark Lord's eyes gleamed with malice.
"Gah ha ha haaa!" he laughed, "Well, look who it is!"
"I'm ready for you, Dark Lord!" I yelled.
He gave me a sarcastic smile.
"Aww, is the widdle adventure party gonna beat me up?"
He gave his best evil-guy laugh. I gave my friends a nod, and we charged into battle. I flung spell after spell, fueled with my hope of seeing Chris again. My team and I fought like a pack of wolves, we always had each other's backs in battle! At one point, the Dark Lord snarled,
"Did you think you were winning?"
He summoned two imps, and stole Ava and... umm... the knight guy's faces to put on them. Two Mega Fire spells later, and the imps were toast. This repeated until I brought the Dark Lord down with some well-placed lightning.
He groaned dramatically, and fell to the pristine stone floor. My heart burned with excitement. Yes, I could see Chris again!
But I started to doubt myself soon after. The golden amulet around the Dark Lord's neck fell and started spewing purple fog.
Then a light blue spirit flew out of it, and disappeared out the window. But that wasn't the weirdest part.
Where the Dark Lord had fallen stood a skinny, feeble-looking man in purple!
"Ugh..." he groaned.
We rushed over, and he mumbled, "What on earth...?" He muttered something else, and took off.
I exchanged confused glances with my friends, then we started to pile out of the throne room. I was the last one to leave. I stopped, staring back into the room. Chris said he would come back when I defeated the Dark Lord... where was he? Did he say that to tease me? That question was answered when I heard,
"Miss me?"
I let out a happy yelp and rushed towards Chris, giving him a big hug and burying my head into his robes.
"You came back!" I exclaimed.
"I told you I would," he teased, "So, do anything interesting today?"
I laughed, and knew it was all over. I wouldn't have to defeat any more Dark Lords, and I could have a future with Chris.
"(Y/N), what's taking so long?" rang Ava's voice, followed by the loud footsteps of my friends.
They popped their heads through the enormous doorway, and saw me embracing the Great Sage. Chris immediately let go and side-stepped away from me in a playful manner.
I was so distracted by my friends' antics that I failed to notice one crucial thing: the blue spirit was back. It hovered above me, spewing blue bubbles, then it lunged for me! I realized the danger I was in too late, and had no time to dodge. While I pathetically stood there, Chris yelled,
"(Y/N), look out!"
Chris lunged forward and intercepted the spirit with his body, sacrificing himself so I would be safe.
"No, Chris! Why would you do that?" I whimpered, but he couldn't hear me.
The Great Sage's body changed into a bigger, blue demon with light blue robes and turquoise hair. He opened his mouth to speak, but instead of Chris' voice it was a deeper, gravely monotone.
"Sweet! This face comes with a cool new body! Woooo, talk about a makeover!"
In his hand he clutched a staff with the same weird eye symbol as the Dark Lord's amulet. Whatever this was, it wasn't Chris anymore...
"Are you joking?" he exclaimed, grinning maliciously, "I get Great Sage powers too? This is even better than being a Dark Lord! I'm now... and even Darker Lord!"
Dude, have you ever heard of variety?
"Hey, give him back!" I yelled.
The Darker Lord turned to me, his eyes no longer the teal I had loved so much about Chris'.
"You want your friend back?" he snarled, "Well, you can come and get him. Good day!"
Not-Chris laughed, and flew off into the skies. Chris was gone.
Suddenly, my guardian spirit popped into my head, launching into a big speech about what had happened. But I knew what had happened. After the heirloom's voice left my head, I broke down in tears.
"Chris saved me..." I sobbed, "We need to save him!"
"One problem," Ava ventured, "how are we gonna follow the Dark Lord?"
That was a pretty big problem. However, like all problems, it had a solution.
"Hi again."
