Chapter 17

Amanda was a busy person. Having a high post at a reputable bank, her schedule was always packed. But of course, there were those little slots and spaces of times in between here and there. But she only prioritized two things for those two things were the most important things in her life now; her work and Summer, of course, her best friend in the entire world.

So when Amanda gets a sudden call from an unknown caller on a typical Thursday working day, she picked it up half-heartedly and curiously.

  “Hello?” Amanda asked curiously.

“Hello,” Jake said, “Is this Amanda Reese?”

“Yes,” Amanda scrunched her eyebrows. Who is this male…? “Speaking?”

“This is Jake Dawson,” He replied smoothly and Amanda raised her eyebrows. Questions flooded her mind.

“How did you get my number?” Amanda demanded, “And why are you calling me?”

Jake found himself stuttering at such a demanding demeanor. “Um…Summer had told me about you before and I got my…personal assistant to get ahold of your number,” He explained, “And I am calling you because of Summer. I need a favor.”

At this, Amanda perked up. She sat up straighter and pressed the phone closer to her ear. Now what did he want? Did he hurt Summer and is using her to find a way to get back to her? Assumptions swirled her mind. “I am listening.”

“Well…I am not sure whether you know about Summer’s…art talent,” Jake began, “but since you’re her best friend, I suppose you do…you do, right?”

“Of course,” Amanda replied, a picture of Summer’s artwork flashed in her mind. Her friend’s gift of art had blown her away every time she unveiled a new creation to her.

“I caught a glimpse of one of her paintings the other day at her place…without her permission,” He quickly added, “And I was wondering whether you know where all her artworks are.”

“So Summer doesn’t know that you know about her masterpiece?” Amanda confirmed. “And suppose I do, what are you intending to do?”

“She doesn’t,” He said, “I have this plan to…”

“I vote for the red one,” Havana commented, inspecting the three different dresses held up by three of the employees in the shop.

“I have to agree with Havana,” Danielle waltzed over to the dress and took it from the employee’s hands, caressing the silk fabric and examining the sleek simple design, “It suits the Christmas theme and it’s gorgeous.”

“What do you think, Summer?” Havana asked. They were dress-shopping for Summer after all. Summer walked over to where Danielle was and examined the dress.

“It’s lovely,” She commented and was about to continue when Danielle threw the dress in her hands.

“Well hurry up and try it on then!” Danielle grabbed Summer’s arm and dragged her to the dressing room, leaving no room for Summer to voice out her own opinion.

Sighing, Summer quickly changed into the silk red dress that brushed against the floor. Don’t get Summer wrong, the dress was utterly beautiful. It had a sleeveless, strapless, wrap-like bodice that hung tightly on her upper body, shaping her curves. Then red silk flowed down from the bodice all the way to Summer’s feet, brushing against the floor. Not to mention, the slit in the dress that showed off her legs. Once done, she unlocked the dressing room door and stepped out. Collective gasps by Havana and Danielle were heard.

“Oh my God,” Danielle said, utterly amazed, “You look absolutely gorgeous.”

“But don’t you think it’s a little…” Summer tugged on the strapless, sleeveless bodice top, “revealing?”

“No it’s not!” Havana argued, “It looks just perfect!”

Danielle waved an employee over, “We’re taking it!”

Summer hanged up the magnificent dress in her closet and shut it. The Christmas Ball was tomorrow. She sighed deeply. The most important appearance of Summer and Jake yet. So much faking and acting…or did Summer perhaps, enjoy it?

Truth be told, Summer had never went to a Dawson Christmas Ball before. She had preferred to stay at home with her family, invite the rest of the relatives from all over the world over, and just have a nice evening of catching up and delicious home cook food made by her chef of a mom.

“Listen,” Amanda said as she melted some butter on a pan in Summer’s kitchen, one hand on her hip, “Just act civilized, you know. Act sophisticated. You want to impress people! You’re the Summer Falls everyone’s talking about. Steal their hearts! Blow their minds away by your smartness and hotness!”

“So much for no pressure,” Summer muttered, “And hotness?” she scoffed, “Everyone there is rich and their haircuts alone probably cost more than a million. Besides, I don’t want them to like me for someone I pretend to be…”

Amanda stared at Summer, “So? The whole fake dating thing already is a big lie altogether!” she replied, silencing Summer from her retort, “Duh! Girl, have you taken a look in the mirror lately? Jake hasn’t seen you after your makeover yet. I am sure you won’t only take his breath away but everyone else’s too!” Amanda winked.

Summer stared at Amanda in disbelief, her mouth wide open, “Amanda!” She scolded, “You could say the same for yourself! With that smoking dress you bought, I am sure you’ll find an admirer.”

Now it was Amanda’s turn to be speechless and go red, “Whatever,” she said, “with all my work I don’t think I can juggle a relationship.”

  “We’ll see…we’ll see…” Summer smirked.

Summer and Jake’s appearance at the anticipated Christmas Ball will fully confirm of their relationship status. That’s why it was important that they pull it off convincingly and flawlessly. So, of course, a call must be made.

“Hello?” Summer threw herself on her fluffy bed, landing on her back, facing the ceiling. Jake was on her speed dial already.

“To what do I owe this pleasure, Ms. Falls?” Jake said, sending Summer into a fit of laughter.

“I just…I just want to talk about tomorrow.” I just want to hear your voice.

“Relax,” Jake said in a carefree voice. Even Summer was surprised at his coolness. “It’s just like another one of our dates.”

“Just…” Summer found her voice shaky. She’s never met his full family before. “Stay with me…for the whole Ball?”

“Of course, Sum,” Jake said. Summer smiled at his concern-filled voice. “Just keep smiling.”

  Summer laughed, “Just keep smiling.”
