Chapter 35

Amanda wanted to find him. Who? The mysterious stranger who danced with her, of course; he had disappeared the moment the song stopped; she looked away from him. His disappearance was so sudden and his touch leaving her made her skin feel cold. Believe it or not, she missed his touch. And then the question came again: who was this enthralling charming stranger?

Finding the familiar spark of determination in her gut, she set out to find him. How? She remembered the slight distinct features that he had. He had black hair and pulling bluish grey eyes-

“Excuse me, miss,” A waiter startled Amanda, appearing in front of her, “Here is a note for you.”

Handing her a carefully folded piece of paper, the waiter disappeared. Hoping it was another clue that would hopefully bring her one step closer to her purpose of being at the Masquerade in the first place, Amanda opened the letter hastily and let her eyes devour the page.

  ‘To Amanda,

Have your feet worn out from dancing? I certainly hope not. Ready for round two? Ballroom 2 is to your right.

Charmingly winning your heart, your secret admirer.’

Amanda’s eyes shot up to her right and without wasting any time, she set off to Ballroom 2, in hope she would find this secret admirer once and for all.

Her feet have not worn out at all. In fact, she was just getting started.

Even in high school, Amanda was always the braver one than Summer. She would be the one that asked the questions and stood up to the bullies. So it isn’t really surprising when she enters Ballroom 2 and demands for answers…literally.

“I know you’re here,” She said, her voice bouncing off the walls of the pitch black Ballroom 2, the minute she stepped in it and shut the door behind her.

“I know.” A man’s voice replied, echoing throughout the ballroom, startling Amanda slightly. “I presume you are here for a dance?”

Amanda scoffed, “You can’t be that dumb,” she shot back, “you know clearly what I want.”

The man chuckled and for a second Amanda sworn she’d heard that chuckle somewhere before, but it stopped the moment she tried to place a finger on it, “How about a deal?”

“I am listening,” Amanda replied professionally.

“One dance,” He began, “and you get to guess who I am. If you guess right, then that’s all. If you don’t, we’ll keep dancing.”

“Like I haven’t already started guessing,” Amanda said sarcastically. “But bring it on.”

He chuckled again, “I hope you put on your dancing heels, baby,” he said huskily, “because I will sweep you off your feet.”

Maybe it was Amanda’s pride that got in the way. Or the sudden boost of confidence and determination. But he certainly did not mention they were going to be dancing in the dark. No, literally.

A classical song started playing and she felt him place his hands on her waist and they readied themselves in their starting stance. He took the lead, obviously, since he knew where he was going. Amanda squinted her eyes in the dark. Who was he? His voice was low and deep but she was sure it wasn’t the normal tone of his voice, but it did sound familiar.

“So?” The man asked, once the music ended. They broke apart from each other.

“I…” Amanda bit her lip. She had no clue. “I don’t know.”

“Then one more dance it shall be,” He said and she sworn she could feel him smirking.

So they readied themselves again and danced to another different song. He even twirled her this time and when she crushed into his chest, she could feel it was hard and muscly so he was definitely well-built. Mm. That was two clues, counting his voice.

When the song ended, Amanda felt her heart slowly sinking. Damn. How many clues was she going to need before finally figuring out who he was? She needed more subtle yet obvious hints.

“Give me a hint,” Amanda said before he could say anything.

He chuckled and Amanda’s eyes widened for a second as the familiarity of it hit her again, “Two more dances and if you still can’t figure me out, I’ll give you a clue. Hopefully by then you’ll have me figured out.”

Amanda agreed and two dances sped by. Amanda had to admit, he was a good dancer. Does that count as a clue? That adds it on to three clues then. She found herself slightly out of breath by the fourth dance.

“So?” Amanda said, catching her breath.

He took a step closer, judging from the sound of footsteps, “This is the only clue you’ll get. If not, we keep dancing, sweetheart.”

“Deal,” Amanda said and he stepped even closer now, their chests almost touching.

He took another daring step closer to her, if that was even possible. Then he started to lower his head towards hers, until she could feel his breath fan onto her face. Her breathing became uneven as she realized what he was going to do. His spicy cologne was drowning her as he placed his hand on her cheek before slowly leaning in into her lips.

The minute their lips touched, she knew immediately who it was; because there was only one person that had ever kissed her like that; only one person who’d make her stomach to somersaults; only one person who’d make her heart melt and feel tickly all over.

And that person was none other than Cameron Pierce.

“Try the raisin scones,” Jeffrey said to Summer as they laden their plates with desserts. Well, who could resist the tempting table of desserts laid out before them?

Summer quirked an eyebrow at him, “Are you sure?”

“Definitely,” Jeffrey smirked, “Why, do you not trust me, Emilia?”

Summer bit her lip to hide her smile, “Considering we just met and we’re in a place where anybody could be anybody, there isn’t any reason to.”

Jeffrey chuckled, “Reason accepted.” He sent her a melt-worthy smile that Summer sworn she saw before… “Well then try the raisin scones and hopefully I’ll earn your trust.”

Smirking, Summer took a bite of the hot buttered scones and boy did it taste good. Her eyes widened for a second as she nodded her head approvingly. “Mm,” Summer swallowed, “trusted.”

Jeffrey smirked and leaned in close to her ear, “I told you.”

As they ate their desserts amidst the sophisticated chatter and classical music, Jeffrey checked his Swiss watch. Ah. It was almost 12 midnight; time for part three of the plan to be carried out. He looked up and let his eyes travel across the room and they met a pair of familiar ones. Danielle stood across the room and nodded at him. It was time.

Jeffrey turned to the breath-taking beauty standing next to him and smiled knowingly.

“Emilia, meet me at the balcony in 15 minutes,” He said, leaning closely to her.

“Why?” Summer said but by the time she turned to look at him, he was gone.

Let part three begin.
