Chapter 28
Jake really did get his lazy ass off his couch and head to Cloud 9. He knew his best friend’s short statement of ‘I’ll be at Cloud 9’ was more like ‘I’ll see you at Cloud 9’. It wasn’t that hard to tell.
So, he entered Cloud 9 and immediately, the memories of the day he met Summer rushed to him like a sudden warning-less tsunami. He still remembered seeing her downing shots non-stop, looking gorgeous in her tight-fitting dress. And from the moment they talked, he knew she was different.
He sighed. He pushed all thoughts of her away and buried it. She should be the last thing he thought about right now. Speaking of which…he did tell Holly he was going to call her…he groaned. Holly can be such a mom sometimes.
Brushing all thoughts aside, Jake looked up and scanned the half-filled Cloud 9. He felt weirdly comfortable and cozy in its posh atmosphere. However, after thoroughly scanning the rooming for his dark-haired best friend, he failed to spot him. What…? Cameron was always the earliest amongst them. This was weird.
However, when his eyes reached the bar, he did a double take. He squinted his eyes. No way. Newly ombre-colored brown hair; lightly tanned skin…it had to be Summer sitting on one of the stools by the bar. She was wearing a simple light purple dress, dangling her legs. He was completely taken aback. Why was she here?

“Meet me at Cloud 9,” Amanda said the moment Summer picked up.
“Wha-” she was just about to protest when Amanda shut her up.
“No questions asked.” With that, Amanda ended the call, leaving Summer dumbfounded.
She took off her black-rimmed glasses and rubbed her tear-stained eyes. She set down her sketchbook and her mouth formed a thin line. Why would Amanda want her to be at Cloud 9? She glanced at the clock. It was almost 5. Maybe Amanda just wanted company for dinner…
Sighing, she was just about close her sketchbook and tuck it away when she found herself enthralled by her very own artwork done by only an 8B pencil. It was a picture of a girl and a boy, standing on a broken bridge but each of them on different sides. Pained looks made their faces. But the message it was trying to convey was obvious; they were torn from each other; they were so close, yet so far.
Jake popped out in Summer’s mind and she felt her heart constrict. No. She shouldn’t be thinking about him. With one last look at the magnificent piece of art, Summer closed the sketchbook shut, threw it on the coffee table along with the pencil and headed to her room.
He was the last thing she wanted to think about tonight. If only she knew what awaited her at Cloud 9…
Summer found that she was early. Amanda was nowhere to be seen but it was normal. She was always earlier anyways. Finding a seat by the bar, Summer sat on it and placed her stuff on the counter and pulled out her phone. As she dangled her legs, she sent Amanda a text, demanding to know where she was, unknowing of the presence of a familiar man by her right.

He was just about to approach her when he remembered. Wait. A theory struck him on why she might be here. Remember the reason why she was here the last time? A voice nagged in his mind. She was here because she was heartbroken…
Jake paused mid-step. His heart felt heavy. He should just turn around and leave.
But then she turned and their eyes locked. And for that split second right there, they just held each other’s gazes, looking at each other as though nothing else existed around them. But then as realization crossed Summer’s face, she was instantly overwhelmed by a thousand emotions at once.
Instantaneously, Summer got up. What was he doing here? She was waiting for Amanda, who was supposedly running late. Jake looked gorgeous, as usual, in a simple button down and black pants. His hair was slightly tousled but he looked more…messed up, unlike his usual cool demeanor. You could see those slight changes. Summer took cautious steps towards him as he just stood there.
Nervously, she tugged a strand of hair behind her ear and cleared her throat, putting together the right words to say. He still stood there, frozen as ice, as though not knowing what to do: leave or listen.
“Jake…” Summer began, “W-what are you doing here?” Her voice quivered slightly.
“I…I was supposed to meet Cameron.” He said expressionlessly as Summer nodded slowly.
She ran a hand through her hair, smoothening it out, “Listen, Jake,” she started, realizing this was probably the only chance she was going to get, “it wasn’t what it seemed that night.”
Jake kept a straight face, “Then?” But he failed to eliminate the anger in his voice, letting his emotion leak into his response.
Summer bit her lip, “I can explain, everything-”
“Oh my God, is that Jake Dawson and Summer Falls?” A lady’s loud voice cut them off and Summer had to stop herself from rolling her eyes. They both whipped their heads to a blonde middle-aged lady who’s mouth was formed in a ‘O’ shape.
“Excuse me, can I help you?” Jake questioned the lady, who looked like a fish, gaping at Jake. Summer suddenly felt a pang of jealousy at the way the lady was staring at Jake; as though he was some kind of candy…wait, jealousy?
“I-I was just- just on my way out,” The lady stuttered before hurrying away. Summer pursed her lips.
“As I was saying,” Summer restarted, “I can explain about-”
“Jake! Summer!” Once again, Summer got cut off. She inhaled deeply, her anger rising dangerously. This time it came from the entrance of Cloud 9. She looked to the entrance, ready to explode when she was blinded by bright flashing lights.
“Ah shit,” Summer heard Jake curse silently. Suddenly, his arm snaked around her waist, pulling her into his chest, shielding her from the paparazzi. Summer was too shocked to respond.
“Are you guys back together now?” One of them asked as Jake skillfully guided Summer and him out of Cloud 9 and to his Porsche parked outside.
“We never broke up in the first place,” Jake answered swiftly as Summer hid her face in Jake’s chest.
With that, they got into Jake’s Porsche and sped off into the twilight.
