Chapter 13

Jake entered his penthouse and noticed a dim flickering light; the only light in the penthouse, coming from the TV area. He quietly shut the door behind him and walked towards the TV room where a man was sitting on the sofa, watching some movie on his flat-screen TV.

At first, Jake jumped, but then he remembered that he wasn’t the only one living in his penthouse anymore. Alex. He breathed a sigh of relief and his heart slowly returned to its normal pace.

Alex turned around at the sound of Jake’s sigh of relief, “Jake,” He beamed, “How was your date?”

Jake froze at the word, ‘date’, “It wasn’t a date,” He quickly protested, “It was…good.”

“Whatever you say,” Alex said, smirking knowingly.

“Do you know what month it is?” Holly beamed happily as she pulled open the curtains open in Jake’s living room.

“The light!” Cameron used his hands to shield his face from the sudden shine of light.

“You’re not a vampire, Cam,” Dani shot from the end of the couch, where she sat cross-legged next to Summer and Jake.

“It’s almost December,” Havana answered, while sitting on the floor painting her long nails a hot neon pink colour.

“And do you know what that means?” Holly asked cheekily, ignoring Cameron’s protests, walking over to the front of them but not blocking their view of the TV.

“Um…” Summer scrunched her eyebrows at Holly, “what does that mean?”

“It’s time for the Christmas Ball!” Zach cried happily.

“What Christmas Ball?” Summer asked, not understanding.

“Every year,” Holly said happily, “the Dawson’s,” she eyed Jake, “host a huge Christmas Ball at the Dawson Mansion.”

Summer was about to ask where and what the Dawson Mansion is when Jake whispered into her ear, “The Dawson Mansion is where my grandparents and a few of my relatives from the Dawson side live.”

Their close proximity startled her and she felt her cheeks starting to redden, much to her embarrassment, “Oh,”

“It’s like a tradition every year,” Dani explained, noticing Summer’s still confused face, “But it’s an invite-only event.”

“It’s awesome,” Cam added, “the food is spectacular.”

Havana turned to glare at Cam, “So you just go there for the food?”

“And the hot girls too,” Cam said, grinning cheekily, “all the famous people come.”

Zach high fived Cam and Havana rolled her eyes.

“So yes, about the Christmas Ball,” Holly continued, “I am super excited. You guys are going to be there, right?”

“Hell yeah,” Dani grinned, “wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Later in the evening, everyone left except for Summer. One by one they left, going off for their own personal activities that they couldn’t be absent at. And eventually, it was only Summer and Jake left.

“Why don’t you stay for dinner?” Jake suddenly asked. It was already around half past 5 so why not?

Summer laughed out loud. “You and I both know you’re indirectly asking me to cook you dinner,” Summer said and stuck her tongue out at Jake.

  Jake frowned, “I can cook.”

“Yeah, right,” Summer snorted, “I’ll cook.”

  “Really?” Jake’s eyes brightened.

“Well,” Summer then stood up, “we don’t want to die of starvation, do we?”

Summer finally settled on making some spaghetti Bolognese with beef, plus some of Jake’s expensive red wine. It was simple and nice. Summer swore she could’ve cook everything in less than hour, if it weren’t for Jake.

“OK,” He announced when they entered the kitchen, “where do we start?”

“Who said you were cooking?” Summer shot back as she opened the fridge and started to pick out the correct ingredients.

“It’s my kitchen!” He whined and Summer bit her lip to keep her from cooing. He was like an immature kid when it comes to things he couldn’t do. “And there’s always a first time for everything.”

Summer took out some fresh ingredients and closed the fridge, proceeding to the pantry. “Alright,” She glanced at him with a very amused smirk.

“Really?” Jake walked to where Summer was standing.

“Well you need to learn anyways,” Summer took out a box of spaghetti, placed it on the island counter and put her hands on her hips, “we’ll start easy.”

“Hit me with your best shot!” Jake smirked arrogantly, not knowing that he would be regretting it later.

“They need to be thinner,” Summer commented and Jake huffed. Summer was currently standing opposite Jake at the island counter where he was slicing some tomatoes.

“They’re thin enough!” Jake cried aloud.

“No they’re not,” Summer taunted, clearly enjoying his childish behavior.

“Ugh! I give up,” Jake sighed loudly, putting the knife down on the chopping board and facing Summer, who was watching Jake with her arms crossed and with a very amused smirk on her face. “You do it.”

“Sure,” Summer hopped over to the other side of the counter and started slicing the tomatoes with ease. Not 5 minutes later, they were all evenly sliced.

“How do you even do that?” Jake asked, pure admiration on his face.

“Practice makes perfect, Jake,” Summer smiled, skillfully grabbing the tomatoes and throwing them in the saucepan, “You’ll get there…eventually.”

“So what do I do, now?” Jake said, feeling helpless.

“Stir the spaghetti,” Summer said gently.

45 minutes later, the spaghetti Bolognese was done. And boy did it smell good.

“This has to be the best spaghetti I’ve made so far,” Summer commented as she poured the spaghetti sauce onto the spaghetti, the hot red sauce sizzling.

“You mean, ‘we’ made,” Jake corrected and Summer let a laugh escape from her lips.

“Though I could’ve cooked it faster if you didn’t help,” Summer added, earning a glare from Jake.

“Isn’t this the part where you’re supposed to say, ‘oh thank you Jake! I couldn’t have done it without you!’” Jake said, mimicking Summer’s voice badly.

“I do not speak like that!” Summer protested.

“Whatever you say,” Jake teased, “Now give me that spaghetti. I am starving.”
