Chapter 15

Summer’s painting left a tattoo in Jake’s mind. The beautifully painted canvas enthralled Jake. And he knew talent like that could not be left hidden. He had met Amanda before, Summer’s best friend, once. She was a pretty blonde, to him. But not as pretty as Summer. 

He could host an event just for the exhibition of Summer’s artwork, or artworks, if she had more. But skill like that? There was sure to be more of where that came from. Probably Amanda would know?

Jake was sure to make Summer noticed.

Summer looked around the busy café through her sunglasses. It was midday and Jake had brought her to a cute little café downtown. Compared to the usual places Jake took her to, this modern upper class café was already plain and simple. And she liked it. She found the others sometimes a little too extravagant and a little too…exaggerated.

With her sunglasses, Summer could look around freely. Half of the crowd in the café were wearing sunglasses too so it was pretty normal, and she felt easily blended with the crowd. Jake was in the toilet. She allowed her eyes to wander across the café.

But suddenly, someone sat opposite her; where Jake was supposed to be sat. She darted her eyes to the person immediately and pushed up her sunglasses, startled. She was quickly relieved to see a short-haired blonde, grinning opposite her.

  “Hello Summer,” Alex chirped. He looked good in a sky blue V-neck shirt and black knee-length pants.

  “Oh hey, Alex,” Summer smiled, but she was still startled by his very sudden appearance.

  “Sorry if I surprised you,” Alex noticed her shock, “I was just passing by when I saw you.”

  Summer raised an eyebrow with a slight smile, “You could notice me in this crowd?”

  “It’s not hard to find a stunning brunette in shades,” He winked and Summer went crimson. Wait, was he flirting with her?

  “Oh Alex,” Jake’s undoubtedly deep voice interrupted them. “Surprised to see you here,”

  “Yeah, I was passing by when I saw Summer,” Alex grinned at his brother, who was smiling. Summer suddenly noticed some small similarities between them. They both had the same smile; that charming, melt-you-to-your-feet smile. But supposing their only relation was from their father, she guessed that they had inherited that from him. But Summer couldn’t help but realize Jake was a tad bit hotter in his elbow-length button down shirt which had a few buttons unbuttoned.

  “Well then why don’t you join us for lunch?” Jake suggested with a grin, pulling an empty chair from a nearby table and sitting on it.

  “Well um, I don’t mean to disturb you guys,” Alex quickly said.

  “It’s fine,” Summer assured, “Right, Jake?”

  “Yeah,” Jake smiled at his half-brother, “You’re in no hurry, are you?”

  “Not at all,” Alex leaned back against the chair.

  “Well then,” Jake signaled for the waiter, “let us order.”

Summer sipped her orange juice as they chatted casually. Alex threw a joke at them and they threw their heads back in laughter, Summer nearly choking on her orange juice in the process. Alex had a good sense of humor, all right! Suddenly, Jake’s phone rang, interrupting their frenzy of laughter hastily. He picked up the phone and listened for a good 1 minute, his expression hardening and losing all its warmth. He quickly closed the phone without a goodbye and looked up to Summer and Alex.

  “Sorry guys, I have to go,” He pursed his lips, “Duty calls.”

  “Work?” Alex inquired and Jake nodded. Alex nodded sadly, “Then I’ll see you at home, brother.”

  Jake gave Alex a pat on the back and then faced Summer, who was looking at him intently. “You really have to go?” She asked softly. Jake really couldn’t tell whether she was acting or whether she was really concerned. 

  “Yes,” He leaned down and slowly kissed her on the lips, it was short and sweet. Perfect for paparazzi. “I’ll see you later, love.”

  “Okay,” Summer nodded and gave him a small smile, which he returned before waving and leaving.

  “So,” Alex began after a few minutes of silence, “How’s the, uh, spaghetti?”

  Summer looked down at her half-eaten plate of spaghetti Bolognaise and swallowed, “It’s-its good,” Summer commented, shrugging. “Yours?”

  “It’s chewy,” Alex said, making Summer laugh. He had ordered a steak. 

  “So, what do you do?” Summer said, attempting to make conversation.

  “I work in Dawson Co. too,” Alex started, “But not in the Headquarters.”

  Summer raised her eyebrows; she was impressed. Alex noticed her surprise and smirked.

  “Why?” Alex asked, “Are you surprised I am working in Dawson Co.?” And Jake’s never told you about me before?

  “No it’s just that,” Summer cleared her throat, “I never heard about you before…and you’re so young.”

  “Oh,” Alex chucked, amused, “I am not a playboy like Jake you see,” His tone grew softer at the end, almost like a whisper, but with a smirk, “And I am 21, Summer.”

  Summer couldn’t help but laugh at his mysterious tone, “Oh, you’re 21 too?” Summer brightened, “Me too!”

  Alex widened his eyes, “Oh! Interesting, where did you study?”

The rest of the afternoon passed by like this and at one point, Summer was laughing so hard her stomach hurt and her eyes watered. She never knew Alex was such a funny guy.

When the sky turned three shades darker in the evening, Summer realized it was about time she went. She remembered she had a manicure and pedicure appointment with Amanda. She took one glance at her watch before signaling the waiter for the bill.

  “It’s on me,” Alex gave Summer a reassuring smile when she tried to take out her purse before taking out his wallet.

  “Alex,” She dragged his name out unsurely.

  “Relax,” Alex gave her a prize-winning smile, “Besides, it’s rude for the boy not to pay.” He put a handful of bills and the waiter left.

  Summer smiled at Alex, “Thank you,” she said, “Anyways, I have to go now. Thanks for accompanying me for lunch.”

  Alex chuckled, “No problem, Sum.” He smiled as she got up from the table, putting on her shades and her brilliant brown hair catching light. “See you soon.”
