Little Finn took a deep breath in as he scarcely glanced at his parents, who were both seated on the brown, worn out, leather couch. He was seated on the ground, but for his upcoming announcement, he decided to stand up. For when he stood he was taller than them. It gave him a much-needed confidence boost.

"Mom, dad," he said in a low tone, his voice cracking instantly. He cleared his throat and looked at his parents who were staring at him curiously. "I-I have an announcement to make," he settled on saying.

His father, who was originally sitting with his legs crossed, uncrossed his legs and sat up straighter. His mom gave him more attention than she had ever before. At least that's what it felt like to Finn.

"So, what's this so-called announcement?" his father asked in a musing tone.

Little Finn opened his mouth but no words came out. Did he really need to out himself to his parents? Surely he could wait another day, week, or even year. There was no reason for him to rush the process.

The what if's were endless. And the chances of a bad outcome were much more greater than that of a good outcome. Everyone in town knew how close his parents were to getting a divorce. He knew it, too, despite only being 12.

He didn't really mind. He knew people fell out of love sometimes. He just didn't know it would happen to him.

"Finn, honey, what's wrong?" his mother asked. The words felt rehearsed, lacking any kind of emotion.

Finn cleared his throat again, shaking away the bad thoughts. Everything will be alright. I can do this.

The words dropped before he even realized it.

"I'm gay."

That day marked the end of Finn's short childhood.
