Mia's POV
I woke up the next morning feeling better to lead my pack. I wouldn't let some guy come in here and try to ruin my concentration. My dad could tell I was in business mode while eating breakfast. "Good luck, honey." He told me and hugged me before I left. My dad was going to start his new job as a substitute teacher at our local high school. Most of the school was part of the park while we had a couple of humans. The high school only graduated 50 students a year. "You too, Dad."
I get into my office, and Ben soon follows suit. I liked being earlier than him; it would be unprofessional of the alpha to be latter than the Beta. We settled in, deciding today would be decorating and organizing the office day. My dad wasn't into interior decorating, but Ben loved it. I was okay; I could tell you if a room was done tastefully. I couldn't put the pieces together and design a place to save my life.
Ben was looking up furniture when his phone rang. I didn't overthink it. "Hello, Diamond Heart Pack. This is Beta Ben speaking." He answered all business-like.
Someone answered and left Ben, all confused. I laughed a little; Ben was probably just nervous about his new position.
"Oh, did you want to speak to Alpha Mia personally?" He asked, and then I got curious.
"Who are you talking to?" I faintly asked, but Ben ignored me, so I got closer. I could hear the other end ask about a pen and paper. But I recognized the voice, and it sent shivers down my spine. Why was he calling Ben and not me? Did he never want to talk to me again?
It took Ben a minute to grab the pen and paper ready. He finally said to go ahead. I leaned over and read what he wrote down. James was giving Ben his number. But why? To give to me? To keep for himself? Ben told him a confused goodbye before they hung up.
"What did he want?" I asked the minute the receiver hit the rest of the phone. "He wanted you to call him to get involved in the training program." Ben sounded confused, just like me.
"Yeah, he already said so yesterday."
"Yeah, but he wanted to be involved with not just attending, but organizing and setting up." I laughed. "He just wants to get close to me; he doesn't care." I scoffed, and Ben studied me."Are you not wanting to share the credit?" I felt hurt at first when he said that but thought about it. "Okay, I want the credit gosh darn it! But it's still suspicious he wants to go all in, am I wrong?"
"No you definitely aren't wrong. We just have to play nice until his true colors are shown again." Ben assured me. I went back to my desk to finish decorating our office. We took a break for lunch and went to sit outside with the pack. Most of them were at school, either as staff or students.
My aunt noticed I was spacing out too much during lunch. "Are you thinking about him?" She asked. "Yes, he called Ben today. We think he's up to no good." She laughed.
"All men are up to no good." I turned to Ben, expecting him to argue, but he just agreed. We all laughed. "Most of the pack thought you were just nervous before meeting the big shoots. No one suspects a thing." My aunt reassured me, and I feel better. I don't want the pack to think I'm distracted.
We went back to the office, and I decided to give him a call. I walked through with Ben what my conversation was going to be like. I was just going to stay with the business about the training program. Ben and I couldn't organize it alone, and that's why we did reach out to the other alphas. They just needed to sign up trainers and participation and then organize the packs' transportation. Once they arrived here, we would take care of the rest.
I took a deep breath and called. This would be easy; I just need to keep my business mask on. I chocked on my breath as I heard his deep voice in my ear. "Hello?" God, I wanted him bad.
