James's POV
Once we arrived at the Broke Light Pack, we were immediately rushed to the building. We all shifted into our wolves and stormed the building. My warriors rounded up the hostages and led them to safety. The attack was done in five minutes, thankfully.
We started taking all the conspirators into custody. Alpha Crystal wanted to integrate them to make sure we had all of them. I shifted back to human and went back into the building to help make sure everyone was taken into custody.
Someone rammed into my chest, knocking me to the floor. I tried putting up my arms to fend them off, but they were already attacking my chest. I screamed in pain, and then they were gone. My wolf was already working on healing me, but there was too much blood.
I was rushed to the hospital, delirious from the pain. Sweating and in pain, I wanted to scream but couldn't form a word. I just wanted Mia.
Falling in and out of consciousness, I wanted to sleep off the pain. I was sweating uncontrollably and couldn't move. The doctors and nurses rushed around me. I finally let the sleep win. I dreamed of Mia.
Mia's POV
"He's done with surgery," I heard Isabella say as she tried waking me up. I quickly opened my eyes and shot up too quickly. She caught me before I fell and led me over to his room.
I gasped and started to cry as I looked at pale James hooked up to so many machines. Isabella led me to the empty chair next to him, and I sat down. I grabbed James's cold hand and held it.
The doctor came in. "What happened," I asked.
"One of the conspirators hid as they were being taken. He was in his wolf form and attacked James's front. Greyson from your pack helped pull the wolf off of James."James surprisingly kept alive as we brought him here. We stitched up his chest and made sure there was no enteral bleeding. James lost a lot of blood and will need to stay here for a while. Whenever he is ready, he will wake up. We do have him on a bunch of pain medicine, so I doubt that it will be soon."
He left us, and I relaxed into my chair. For now, it seemed James would recover from this. "I know this isn't the greatest time, but Mia, I would like you to meet Crystal."
The girl who was sitting next to us smiled. "It's nice to meet you." She told me, and I faintly smiled. Crystal then had to leave us for her pack.
"She seems really nice," I told Isabella, and she lit up."Yeah, she is. Once James got hurt, she was made sure he was immediately taken here and treated. It took a while since he kept burning off the morphine with his fever."
That explains why he was in pain for so long. Isabella and I watched a little TV while waiting for James to wake up. I texted my dad to tell him the update the doctor gave me. He said he would be fine running the pack if I want to stay here. James was in no condition to move back to our pack.
My aunt couldn't stay, but I told her I understood. She couldn't drop everything for me. Isabella forced me to eat again, and I didn't want to throw up again. She also forced me to drink some water.
The nurses would come in to check his vitals and kept telling me he was fine. I just wanted him to wake up so I can say to him I'm sorry for what I said. As if he could read my mind, he slowly opened his eyes.
I rushed over and bent over his face. Those gorgeous green eyes stared at me. The happy tears started to fall. "Oh, James, I am so sorry for what I said. I didn't mean it, and I just was so afraid you were going to die. I promise."
James interrupted me with a groan, and I rushed to push the nurse button. One came in and smiled at James. "It's nice to see you awake, and you will be fine after about a week. You're going to stay here." She checked all the machines before leaving.
"Are you too tired to talk yet," I asked, and he weakly nodded. "Isabella, would you mind asking when they're going to be able to feed him?"
"Of course." She left, and I smiled at James. I could tell he wanted to smile back. His eyes lids started to drop, and I laughed. "Rest, my love, and I'll be waiting for you."
James went back to sleep, and Isabella came back with an answer to when he's ready for food. She was a great friend and stayed by my side as James slept. The doctor said him sleeping so much was a good sign of healing. James slept for the rest of the day away.
Isabella brought me dinner, and we ate while watching TV. Crystal came by to see how he was doing. I was more talkative with her than before. I was too focused on James at that time to be a conversationalist.
Crystal was sweet to Isabella and insisted that she was fine to stay here with me. I insisted she should go home and enjoy being with Crystal. Isabella and her mate soon left after that. My best friend assured me that she would be back tomorrow.
I texted Ben and my dad the updates and cuddled up on the couch. "Sleep here," I heard James whisper, and I rolled on my side to face him.
"James, you're awake." He grunted as if to repeat himself. "I can't do that because I'm going to hurt you."
He faintly shook his head, and I sighed. There was no changing his mind. I knew that physical touch might help him relax and therefore heal faster. So I carefully cuddled into bed with him.
I made sure I wasn't applying any pressure on him. One of the nurses came into check on him, and I panicked. "I'm so sorry. He insisted that I came up here."
She put her hand up to stop me. "It's okay. We understand that mates need to be close to each other. That's why our beds are bigger than normal hospital beds."
She left after checking all the machines, and James fell asleep again. He was stiff as a board sleeping with all the wires and such. I cuddled next to him, holding his hand.
"I love you," I whispered and fell asleep listening to his snores.
