zach herron's eleventh birthday. he could not be more excited.

zach has grown up in curiousity. he lived in a little place called godric's hollow, a quaint little village.

the village always seemed so... magical to him. but magic wasn't real. that was only in the movies.

in godric's hollow, there was this house. it was terribly run down, burnt down. no one lived there.

zach was always so curious as to what happened to that house. he's never heard of anyone living there, what happened?

as if the village didn't already seem magical to him, that one house... that felt like the most magical part of the place.

sometimes, if zach feels the need to get away but doesn't know where to go, he'll go inside the broken house.

it's so empty in there, no sign of life for years.

it was like zach's own little clubhouse. if only he had friends to share it with.

today was his eleventh birthday, he was celebrating with reese and ryan. his favourite two people in the whole wide world.

they were opening presents and eating cake when the sound of mail came from the front door. his father went to retrieve it as zach opened his present from ryan.

"i love it! thank you!" zach smiled wide as he hugged his younger brother tight. "hey zachary... you've got some mail. probably someone wishing you a happy birthday." his father announced.

he dropped the letter in his lap and walked away to the kitchen.

not that zach was really surprised, he and his father never did seem to have a good relationship. zach just never understood why that was.

he opened the letter gently, carefully, beginning to read it out loud.

"dear mr. herron, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry... but, i didn't apply to a school?"

zach was confused, so was his mother. so she took the letter to read himself. "i guess this explains why you've always seemed different than the kids at your school." she sighed.

"mum? why am i different?" zach's voice wavered. he never has been good with change, and something was clearly changing. "you're magic, baby."

"what? but... magic isn't real. that's in the movies." zach's mother shook her head, "apparently not baby. you're a wizard."

"starting in september, you will be attending a school where you are surrounded by those who are just like you.. magic."

"will i be going away for the whole year? i've never heard of this school, it can't be from anywhere around here."

zach didn't want to leave. he wanted to stay with his siblings.

"you better be gone for the year, i can't handle three kids." his father mumbled.

then again... maybe leaving for the year wouldn't be so bad.
