the summer has ended, it was september once again, and the students were back at king's cross station to board the magical train.

daniel was quick to try and find his friends on the train, successfully spotting them in a compartment near the middle of the train.

"hi daniel! how was your summer?" kay asked him cheerfully. "it was okay, different than all the rest. jack barely spoke one word to me."

he sighed, the group felt bad for him, he lost his best friend from something so ridiculous as blood.

"i should have expected that though, can't believe i thought things would be different outside of school." he shook his head, sighing.

just then, jack and draco walked past their compartment, heading toward the back.

"sick git." jonah muttered, he may not be the oldest of the group, but he did feel a rather protective role.

he and gabriela were the protectors of the group, nothing is happening to their friends, not on their watch.

jonah's comment made daniel's head snap his way, "jonah play nice. we may not be friends anymore but i still care about him." daniel stated.

the other gryffindor boy shaking his head disapprovingly, "he hurt you dani, he's not a good person in my books."

"calling people names makes you as bad of a person as they are." another boy's voice came, zach. he was leant up against the door frame, a rugged book clutched to his chest.

"zach! how was your summer?" christina asked just like kay had. "quiet, what with you lot not around to bug me. got quite a lot of reading done."

he smiled, taking a seat next to corbyn on the right side of the compartment. his friends chuckled at him, happy that he was comfortable around them, opening up more, talking more.

"i bet this year is going to be amazing!" kay sighed excitedly.

"where's tate? there is a required belated birthday hug waiting for her." zach grinned, "i bet she's on her way, better not miss the train though, that would suck." jonah chuckled.

"what're you reading zach?" gabriela wondered, gesturing to the book that now sat gently in the boy's lap. "oh.. uh, in the woods." he answered, "a muggle book?" zach nodded.

"do witches and wizards not read the same books as non-magic people?" he said, not asking anyone specifically.

"not really, there are a few, but i guess we just read more books that have to do with things we learn in school or about famous wizards in our world." corbyn shrugged, "i mean, i myself definitely read muggle books, i think they're cool."

"what's it about zach?" kay asked the hufflepuff, "oh, it's uh... well it's about these two irish detectives and their investigation of a twelve-year-old girl who was killed. it's a six book series, this is the first one."

"i found it in the village library, asked mr. wilson if i could take it to school with me, he said yes obviously." zach smiled. "mr. wilson's nice, he always lets me take books without signing them out."

"is he a wizard? i mean, you do live in godric's hollow. you know, where godric gryffindor was born, it is named after him." zach was befuddled, he had no idea.

"oh, i-i actually didn't know that. but yes, he is. he actually let me take a bunch of books for the year, i can't wait to read them." the brunette smiled again, he loved reading the stories mr. wilson gave him.

"you will remember to study to though. can't have you falling behind." tate spoke as she approached the space. "tate! happy belated birthday!" zach jumped up, giving her a hug. "thank you zach, i've missed you."

"and yes of course i'll keep up my studies, and if i get stuck i know you'll help me." he smirked gently and playfully at his ravenclaw friend.

"hey hey! ask me instead, i'm smart!" corbyn spoke up, getting his friends to laugh at him. "of course you are. you're a besson after all." daniel stated.
