it was halloween and zach was feeling lonely. usually he and ryan would dress up and go out every year but now zach was away. that tradition was over.

ever since that night the friend group sat on the field and zach told of his life back home. no friends, low money.

gabriela has been protective of him, caring for him like no other. zach appreciated it. he's never had anyone like that before.

they all did. they wanted him to feel happy, safe, cared for. he did, he loved his friends for this.

it was still weird calling them friends, he's never called anyone that before. but maybe there's a first for everything right?

zach sat in charms class with gabriela and corbyn on either side of him.

since the beginning of term, corbyn has been competing with hermione granger for smartest student.

the blonde prides himself in how intelligent he is, he loves that he has knowledge other may not know.

he had been studying for this for years, long before he got his letter. but now there's competition, which corbyn didn't mind, it only made him work harder.

today they were working on levitation. they were using feathers. this seemed easy enough for corbyn.

as professor flitwick sent them off to practice, corbyn noticed zach looking slightly confused. "do you need help bud?" the younger nodded awkwardly.

"i-it's easy i just... this is all still, weird to me." zach sighed, "would it help if you saw someone do it first?" the brunette nodded, sitting up straighter to watch.

before corbyn could do it himself, hermione granger's feather was floating in the air. she beat him to it. "well done! look here everyone, ms. granger's done it!"

corbyn huffed, to which zach giggled. he found it funny how corbyn was so hungry to be the smartest.

then zach jumped when an explosive sound came, looking over to see gryffindor seamus finnagin had blown his feather up.

after class, the three friends went to meet up in the courtyard with the rest of their group.

"'ello folks! how was charms class?" kay spoke cheerfully. "seamus finnagin blew up a feather." gabriela answered, giggling lightly.

"yeah well is anyone really surprised? that lad never stops blowing things up." daniel smirks, adjusting his rope a bit.

only for his shoulder to be pushed as draco and jack walk past. "hey! jack do you mind?"

the boy turned around, scoffing before turning back and walking away. "alright that's it! jack! stop!"

daniel went after him, fed up with how his best friend was treating him. "what in gods name has gotten into you?!"

"nothing has gotten into me seavey, i just woke up and realized how much of a disgrace your family is." he spat. "what?"

"dirty blood. a witch and a muggle. disgusting! and making friends with a muggleborn? how low can you go?"

"jack cut it out! this isn't you." the curly haired boy was infuriated now, "yes it is seavey! i mean were you ever really my friend? you wouldn't even listen to me when i needed to talk to you."

"what and draco malfoy is your friend?" daniel scrunched his face, he couldn't believe this. "yeah, he is. at least he listened to me."

jack pushed daniel's hand off his shoulder and scoffed. "don't you get it seavey? you're dirty blood. disgusting and disgraceful."

he scoffed again before walking off with draco. "i can't believe this! what's gotten into him?" daniel shook his head in shock.

"you have to let it go dani, he's not worth it. if he's hanging around malfoy he's not worth it." christina said to him.

the brunette was so hurt, jack was his best friend. how could he just leave him like that? and not care?

at dinner that night, daniel wasn't all that hungry. which shocked jonah and kay considering it was halloween and tonight's feast was incredible.

zach, at the hufflepuff table, he wasn't hungry either. just picking at the food. christina and gabriela attempting to get him to eat it, which wasn't working.

at the ravenclaw table, corbyn and tate were having a complete different experience, eating and laughing.

jack and draco, slytherin table, they were having a casual dinner. nothing out of the ordinary for them.

"troll! in the dungeon! troll in the dungeon!" professor quirrell came bursting into the great hall.

"thought you ought to know." he said before fainting to the ground. there was a silence for a moment before all students were screaming and panicking.

gabriela made sure zach and christina stayed close to her. especially zach.

christina's a pure-blood, she knows a bit of what this world had, but zach knew nothing. gabriela made a vow to herself to protect him at all costs.

"silence!" professor dumbledore shouted, everyone froze, listening to him as he explained what everyone was to do.

zach stayed close to his friends as they were led back to the hufflepuff common room.

once in the cozy common room, zach's quick breathing finally started to relax. "a troll? an actual bloody troll?"

"there's a lot of things in this world zach. just stay close to either of us and things will be alright."
