Chapter Six
*Time skip to Saturday*
Okay so I woke up at seven and was waiting around for my Mammie (thats what I call my grandma). She was taking me to do last minute dress shopping because my dad wouldn’t buy me one. It was probably eight thirty when my dad handed me the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hey Jackalin, you almost ready?” My Mammie asked.
“Yeah I am, where are you?” I replied.
“I’m on the road before yours I should be there in about five minutes.” She said.
All of a sudden I heard a click, she had lost service. I looked at my dad still dressed in his sweatpants.
“Uhm. don’t you think you’re going dress shopping with us like that!” I told him already feeling the embarrassment.
“Oh, I’m not going with you, I trust you’ll do good and behave on your own.” He finished just as we heard a car horn.
I ran out saying good bye and greeted my grandmother telling her to get in the car before he came out and changed his mind. We hopped in the car and tool off heading to Debs in Augusta. The ride was probably about forty-five minutes and filled with non-important chit-chat. Once we arrived at Debs we both ran in excitedly. (Mammie is an amazing person, she never ceases to amaze me and I love being with her she does everything to help me out.)
“Okay read?” She asked looking at me.
“Oh yeah I’m so ready.” I said smiling.
“Okay dear, so what kind of dress do you want?” She asked looking around.
“Well it has to be black, shorter than my knees, make me look good, and be cute.” I said reaching a rack filled with black dresses.
I found a couple and went into the changing room to try them on. The first was black and cute, the top of it looked just like a bra sewed onto a skirt, it even had the claps and everything. It looked cute even though it was a bit tighter than what I would usually wear, but it was still cute. The second I tried on had on strap and the strap had a cool silver design on it, but I didn’t like the way it looked on me so I put the first back on. I went out and showed my grandma and then she said she liked it a lot. I did too, but then I saw another girl come out with it, and I saw what the back half of it looked like on. I ran back in the stall and looked, surely enough it did the same thing. There was a seam line in the middle of the back, and with it being skin tight it basically divided you back in half, which means it did the same with your butt, so you had half your but, then you had a seam line, and the other half of your butt, it was GROSS! I took the dress off and walked out losing all hope. There was a limited supply of dresses that were cute, so I thought I was doomed. Then all of a sudden I caught sight of something hidden. I went over, grabbed it and pulled it out.
“Its-” I began.
“Beautiful!” Mammie finished for me.
I went into the changing room and tried it on. I walked out a few minutes later and my grandma looked at me with her mouth open.
“Its beautiful on you!” She exclaimed.
“You really think so?” I asked her.
“Yes I think that right there is the dress.” She said nodding.
I walked back to a mirror and looked, I did really like it and it complimented my body and made me look pretty. It was black, and layered, it had lace on it, a bow that tied in the front, the top fit perfectly and the bottom went out just a little bit. To me it was a dream come true. We purchased the dress and went to get my hair done. I got it so that the bottom was loosely curled, my bangs were straightened, and the top was pinned back. We were headed back when my dad called. The call was simple, he told me that Kassidy called and gave me her number so I could call her back. I did and my gram went to pick her up so she could come get ready with me. We got back to my house and ran inside.
“Kay, so you wanna see my dress Kass?” I asked her.
“Yes I do of course!!!” She answered jumping up and down.
I took the dress out of the bag, and I admired it some more.
“OH MY GOSH!!!” She yelled looking at it and keeping her mouth open.
“Hey dad, wanna see it?” I asked as he walked by me.
“No, no interest.” He said without looking at me.
Other than those three words he completely ignored me the whole time up until I was about to leave. I walked outside and and Kassidy’s mom looked at me.
“Why are you sad? Its a good night be happy!” She said trying to make me smile. Kassidy then explained my problem and her mom walked into the house pretending to have to use the bathroom. As she was walking out she said that she was gonna kick every guy’s ass if they so much as looked as me, my dad just nodded in agreement. We went back to the car and headed to a restaurant because Marc wanted to see his niece before she went (he couldn’t go because he got suspended for something dumb). Once we got there he stood up and told her to get outta the car. She got out and then he looked at me.
“Get out here now!” He told me. I did as he said and walked over to him.
“Wow,” he murmured looking like he had just seen the most beautiful thing in the world. He gave me a hug and then complimented me as I was getting back in the car. I saw him talking with Kassidy and her mom, after that they got back in the car and we headed off to the dance.
“You know he really likes you, he’s into the girls that are different and unique.” Her mom said looking at me in the rearview mirror.
“Really?” I asked happy at the possibility that he could like me again.
I hung on to that thought as we arrived at the dance. We walked in and immediately I saw Jasey. Of course we had a compromise, she would come for me, but she wasn’t wearing a dress. I walked over to her and we started talking. Pretty soon a bunch of people came up and started telling me that I looked really pretty and they loved my dress. I thanked them and walked off looking around for Halia and Kevin hoping that they showed up.
“He’s not here.” I turned around and saw Kassidy looking at me and holding out her phone.
“What, who isn’t here?” I asked her confused.
“Kevin, he’s not here, and don’t you say that you weren’t looking for him because when I said that your happiness faded, Jackalin, you like him.” I answered me.
I stood there for a moment thinking. The feeling I got that day when he smiled at me, the way I felt when he hugged me, how I wanted to hurt his ex for hurting him. At that moment I realized that I did like him, more than a friend. Kassidy handed me her phone and told me to text him, so I did. He said that he was at a party and he was sorry he didn’t come. He even told me that he bet I looked adorable which made me smile. I spent the rest of the four hours texting him, and all of a sudden I was really happy. I didn’t end up dancing with any guys but I was ok with that. Next stop was Kassidy’s house where we were going to get her stuff. We walked in and found Marc was up playing the playstation. He looked at me and asked how the dance was while Kass went to get her clothes.
“It was kind of sad, I didn’t dance with anyone.” I said.
“Uh-huh! That is not happening he said walking to the radio. He held out his hand and started walking over to me.
“What are you doing?” I asked him, not believing what I was seeing.
“You are going to dance with me, and I’m not taking no for an answer.” He said looking down at me. He then grabbed me and pulled me close while a slow song played. There we stood for the whole song and when it was finished I could hear clapping and an “that was adorable” comment. After that we had to go and went back to my house where we went to bed. My dad still wouldn’t talk to me that day so I just brushed it off and chilled the whole weekend.
