After a week of just a piece of bread and a bottle of plain water per day, finally, I gained the courage to meet Diane in the kitchen.

"Hi, Kate. What do you want to eat?" Diane asked with her zealous spirit after she saw I took a seat at the dining table. "I have salmon, strawberries, shrimp. I have just come back from grocery just now and I can cook for you if you want. Not really a lunch because it 4.00 p.m. now but you know," she added continuously.

"No, thanks," I smiled wryly.

She sighed and took a seat beside me. After that, she took out my hand and looked at me in my eyes. "I don't know, what's going on. But, I have asked El before and she stated that you have a bit miscommunication with Barbara." She said.

"It's not that," I shook my hand while looking at the table.

"Kate, you have shut me out for a week. We didn't talk, we didn't converse, we practically didn't say anything to each other because you're shutting me out. By shutting people out doesn't mean you can solve your problem, Kate," she advised.

"I don't shut everyone out, technically. So, don't be offended," I said.

Diane sighed heavily. "I couldn't figure out if you didn't tell me, Kate," she convinced me to tell her.

I exhaled a deep breath before I looked at her. "Do you like Chris?" I asked.

"Like? What do you mean? As in as my niece's boyfriend or in general?" She asked me back.

"In general," I answered.

"I like him. He's a good boy. But-" she didn't continue.

"But?" I asked her.

"Nothing, I'm just being paranoid," she chuckled.

"No, tell me," I demanded.

"Okay, okay. I don't know why but something was off about him. Not because he did something bad to me or what. I just... he looks familiar. I tried to recover my memory of him, but it's really hard. Well, I'm 39 now so practically, senile," she laughed. "That's not funny," she said as she realized that I didn't laugh along.

"I didn't mean to bring the past, but, do you know Carter?" I asked.

Her eyes went wide and she covered her opened mouth with her hands. "Oh my God! I knew him," she answered.

"How... did you know... him?" I asked.

"That's supposed to be my question. How did you know him?" Diane asked me back.

"I met him when I was working as a courtesan, that your friend, Alicia, recommended," I explained.

"Oh my God! That's not good. You weren't supposed to know him, gosh what do we have to do now?" She was being panicked after saying that.

"Why?" I asked.

"When I was involved in drug and everything, he was my boyfriend. He...." she was stopped by inconsistent breath. "When I chose to stop, he was so mad and he said that he will kill me after I was released from rehab," she gulped.

"Gosh, did he know you have released?" I asked.

"I have no idea," she shook her head. "Anyway, I have planned that we will move to Florida after you register for New York University. I want to run away from this stupid town," she exclaimed.

"Okay," I nodded.

A few minutes later, Diane found her calmness back and she took a seat beside me. "What happened with Chris, actually?" She asked.

"No, you shouldn't know. You should worry about yourself, okay? You looked panic," I exclaimed.

"No, don't worry about that. This conversation is about you. You should tell me what happened between you and Chris. Now, tell me," she requested.
