When I arrived at the hospital, I saw Judy was calmed by Mary. At the corner of the hospital, Chris was sitting alone, crying by himself. I had gotten a call from Mary saying that Louis was admitted to the intensive care unit because he collapsed this morning and he was unstable. It was really sorrowful to see them like this so then, I took a seat beside Judy and she immediately wiped her tears away as soon as she realized my presence.
"Katherine," she carved a smile as she looked at me and I could feel Chris's eyes were also on me after her mom mentioned my name.
"How's Louis?" I asked.
"Doctor admitted him in ICU. For now, there's no news yet," Mary replied.
"I was so worried about Louis. What if he died?" She cried again so I patted her back a few times.
"Don't say that," I calmed her.
"Have you eaten?" Judy asked.
I shook my head while saying, "It's fine. I took breakfast this morning."
"If you're okay, can you accompany Chris to have lunch? He didn't eat anything since he woke up," Mary stated.
I looked at Chris who was still staring blankly on the floor. "I'm sorry if it makes you uncomfortable. You don't have to if you don't want to," Judy smiled wryly and nodded in understanding.
"No, I'm okay. Have you guys eaten yet? I can-"
"We have, Katherine," Mary stopped me.
"Okay," I nodded softly and then I got up, going straight to Chris who was sitting alone.
Something stopped me- the flashback of what he said to me and what he did to me wandering around my mind. I sighed heavily for a few times before I decided to continue walking. Gaining a lot of courage, I took a seat near him, separated by an empty chair.
"Have you eaten yet?" I asked with a slow voice. I understood how hard for him to face this because he was so close to Louis. "Your mom is worried," I continued.
He looked at me and then he put his eyes on the floor before shaking his head.
"You don't eat yet or you don't want to?" I tried to verify the meaning of his gesture. "We can have a light meal. Like boiled egg only or hamburgers," I suggested.
I didn't know why I was willing to talk to him even though we were not in good terms. Realizing that he didn't want to respond nor talk to me, I decided to leave. Just before I started to walk away, he grabbed my hand. I turned my back to look at him and then, he stood up and we walked by each other's side.
"I didn't talk to you because I forgive you," I reminded him after we leave the hospital lobby and went to the nearby grocery store.
"I know, I'm sorry," he replied.
I took two floss buns and two bottles of yoghurts for both of us on the counter. Just when I wanted to give the money to the seller, Chris stopped me by giving his card. He insisted that he wanted to pay so I let him. Then, we walked to the park beside the hospital and took a seat at the bench. I respected his condition so I didn't even think to start an argument or make a fight with him anymore for now.
"How was your final?" Chris asked as he took a bite of the bun. I nodded as a sign that it was going well. "I've got the scholarship," he said.
"Congrats," I smiled wryly.
He bit his lips. "I'm sorry for whatever happened between us," he said again.
I chuckled and then, I showed him a straight face. "It's that easy, isn't it?" I said.
