The Plane

I watched as Maihua sauntered onto the plane with Lex by her side. I tried to not make eye contact with either of them. I heard a squeal, so I peered up and saw both of them standing next to me.

"Maihua's seat is here... but I'm a few rows back, okay?" Lex explained, pointing towards her seat in the back, next to Dani, one of our best friends.

"Yeah... sure... whatever." I looked back down at the book I was reading, Dusk IV... Chapter 6, page 206. Maihua sat down next to me, and tried to start up a conversation between us. She rubbed her hands together before starting to talk.

"So... what are you reading?" She asked, somewhat half-smiling at me. Damn is that attractive on her ... I looked up at her, raising my eyebrow.

"Why do you care?" I joked. She evidently didn't get that it was a joke, because she mirrored my raised eyebrow. "That was a joke..." Maihua fake laughed then looked away, so I went back to reading my book.

"Sorry." She said, turning back to me.

"I have a question to ask you." I stammered a bit, because the plane jerked away from the gate. "It's kind of out of the blue though."

"What's up cupcake?" She rested her head on the neck pillow she was sporting on her shoulders. My heart leaped at the nickname she'd given me. Cupcake. I could listen to her call me that forever. "Y/n?"

"Sorry I zoned out." I laughed and so did she. "How old are you actually? Because some people think you're like twenty and others say you could be like sixteen still." She didn't answer right away... so naturally I was curious... and nervous.

"Nineteen." She mumbled, her cheeks turning a light pink. As if she couldn't be any fucking cuter?

"Wow that's a bit old to just be finishing high school." I said. The intercom static picked up and began to inform us of flight safety regulations.

"Yeah, I was held back a year." She stated. "What about you?"

"What about me?"

"How old are you?" She chuckled, she is so goddamned sexy. Fuck.

"Oh yeah," I laughed too, why are you so awkward y/n! "I'm only seventeen."

"Not too bad." She smiled and looked down at her lap.

"Not too bad?" I responded, confused.

"Yeah, not too bad." She looked up at me and smirked. This is going to be a very long eight weeks.

I couldn't sleep for the entire flight, my mind just kept replaying Maihua calling me cupcake. I could've just melted.

I was jolted out of my daydream when the intercom turned on, "We are now coming to our landing point in Honolulu, Hawaii! Enjoy your stay!" The intercom shut off, lights came on, and the seatbelt sign turned on.

I looked over and saw Maihua sleeping, with her airpods in, the music blaring to the point where I could hear the song. Home by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros. So she has taste...

I took out one of her headphones to say, "We're landing." She half-smiled again and opened her eyes. Immediately, they met mine.

"Hey, cupcake, already..." She rubbed her eyes and reached over me to open the window shade. I gazed out and saw beautiful lush green treetops and sandy beaches.

"It's beautiful!" I exclaimed, smiling. Oh my god!

"It is, isn't it?" She said, flashing me a bright white smile. I felt color rush into my cheeks, I turned away from her and looked out the window once again.

"It really is." I closed the shade and opened my book. She reached over me again to open the window again. "What do you think you're doing?" I swatted her hand away.

"We've been in the airplane for hours... I need some light." She whispered, laughing, not moving her hand away. I grasped her hand and placed it on her lap firmly.

"No." I opened my book again and started to read. Her hand moved up to my face and tucked a few strands of hair behind my ear. I read as her smiling face got closer and closer to my ear.

She susurrated into my ear, "Please", I could see her smile out of the corner of my eye. It drove me insane that she could make me nervous by just speaking to me.

"Whatever." I opened the shade and continued to read Dusk.

Once we landed, I tried to get my bags. But, in the process, all of them in the overhead compartment fell out on top of me.

"Need some help, cupcake?" Maihua said, reaching her hand out to me. I grabbed it, and I swear it felt like electrical waves had just gone off in every inch of my body.

Once I got on my feet, I grabbed my bags and muttered, "Thanks." to the stewardess. I walked out of the plane and down the thin hallway that connected the plane with the airport.

"Oh, my god!" I heard a familiar voice say, I turned around slowly and saw that it was Dani. "This. Place. Is. Gorgeous!" She reported dramatically.

"I know right!?" I said, faking a smile.

I might've still looked dazed, because she asked me, "What's up? You look kind of pale." She looked me up and down, crossing her arms sassily.

"Maihua just came up with this cute nickname for me." I finally spoke. I basically just spaced out... thinking about Maihua... "Cupcake,"

"Earth to y/n!" Dani called out to me. "Earth to y/n!"

"I'm here!" I said, laughing. Just thinking about Maihua gave me butterflies in my stomach. "Sooooo..."

"Wanna head to the cabs to find our bus?" Lex said from behind us, I turned around to see her smiling face holding hands with Maihua.

"Sure." I said, turning back around and speeding up with Dani. "We're going to go find our bus to the house, okay?"

"Yeah, I'll come with." Dani smiled and wrapped her arm around my shoulders. "What name did we use for the bus?"

"I think we used Maihua's last name." I laughed when she leaned over to read.

"What is it?" Dani narrowed her eyes as she tried to read the names on the signs from far away. "y/n?"

"Uh... Lee." I said, smiling, trying to not give away anything.
