You felt your haze slowly wear off as Max's touch on your back brought you back to reality. You were still panting against him as he used his freeze breath to put out the fire from the lightning.
As the moon shone on the both of you, you looked up at Max and the thumping in your ears droned out to a numbing silence. You just felt him against you and his breathing magnified in your ear.
Maybe it was the lightning that deafened you, but the silence made you feel like you were the only two people on the planet.
And before you knew what was going on, he leaned closer, pressing his lips to yours and electrifying your entire body.
Everything that happened between the both of you in the past year was completely forgotten and you pressed yourself against him, wrapping your hands around him and kissing him harder.
You were so happy to be alive, and you just had to show it. That was the reasoning you gave yourself when that little, annoying voice in your head chastised you for kissing your ex-boyfriend. You quickly pushed it to the back of your head, running your hands through his hair as he tilted your head closer.
It was addictive and dangerous but you couldn't stop yourself. Your legs buckled and your head was spinning as your lips molded together.
And then you were spiraling back down to earth and the sweetness on your tongue was bringing you back to reality as you slowly pulled away from him and looked into his shining eyes.
It took you a second to realize that your arms were still wrapped around him and he was holding you flush against him.
You wanted to kiss him again. So badly.
So bad that you felt tears prick at your eyes before you realized that you just couldn't. You couldn't do it again. You couldn't let yourself love him again.
So when he leaned down to kiss you again, you just brushed your lips against him before pulling away.
"We should, um, check on the students." You whispered, unwrapping your hands from his shoulders. You hadn't realized that you had been holding onto him for dear life.
He followed your lead, unlooping one arm from your waist and untangling his hand from your hair.
"Yeah, we probably should."
Even though it felt like the world would implode if you stepped away from him, you took the risk and moved away, feeling your heart ache with every step.
You immediately regretted it. You had wished you had kissed him one more time and then another time after that. But instead you just walked faster to the entrance.
Max followed you till the main hall where you checked up on the students.
"Is everyone okay? Is anybody hurt?" You asked, looking through the crowds of people for someone.
Once your eyes found her you rushed over, "Cherry!"
She looked up at you with teary eyes and immediately ran to you, crying on your shoulder, "(Y/N)!!"
You cradled her head, letting her cry her eyes out and gently shushing her, "I'm sorry for throwing you out, I'm so sorry."
She shook her head, but still didn't say anything, just blubbering adorably into your neck. You squeezed her tightly, sharing a soft smile with Max over her shoulder.
"Cherry, honey, we're gonna take you home now."
She shook her head, "No! I wanna-I wanna go to Phoebe." She cried.
You gently patted her head, "Sweetie, you have to go home, let your parents see that you're alright."
She still shook her head but you could tell that she was beginning to concede.
"I'll tell you what, we're gonna get you home. You're gonna take a warm bath, get changed into some comfortable pj's, eat something and then try and get some sleep. We'll come and get you in the morning."
She nodded, small hiccups escaping her, "You go to Phoebe now."
You nodded, wrapping one arm around her, "Let's get you home first."
"No. Go to Phoebe, I'll be fine."
"Are you sure?" You asked, looking at her for confirmation.
"Yeah, don't worry."
You nodded, turning to Max, "Which hospital?"
When the both of you arrived at the hospital, a feeling of dread filled the pit of your stomach when you noticed the guards at the entrance, waiting along with President Kickbutt and his parents.
Even though it was meant to reassure you, you didn't feel any relief when Max squeezed your hand before walking ahead of you.
Even though you were standing behind him you still saw the guard lift up a pair of handcuffs and you immediately reacted, slicing a wave of water and knocking them out of his hands.
Shocked, Max turned around to face you, giving you a look of warning, "(Y/N) don't-"
"What the hell is going on here?!"
"We're taking Max Thunderman into custody."
"For what?!"
"Taking his family's powers and putting his own sister in the Intensive Care Unit."
"She's in the ICU?" Max asked, horrified.
"Dark Mayhem put her there." You answered firmly, grabbing his hand to comfort him, "Not Max."
"And if it wasn't for Max then Dark Mayhem wouldn't have come there in the first place!"
"Well if it wasn't for Max then the so called most dangerous super villain to ever exist would still be alive and terrorizing the entire town of Hiddenville!"
Max and his parents just stared, completely dumbfounded as you argued with President Kickbutt.
"And the superhero league is very grateful but it doesn't change the fact that he robbed two of the greatest superheroes of their powers."
"Oh boo hoo, so what if he took them! It's not like they're gone forever!" You huffed.
"Are you too stupid to understand the concept of robbing powers?" She sneered and you practically growled.
"First of all, don't call me stupid because I managed to kill the super villain that you and your stupid little hero league have been trying to catch since day one! And second of all, you clearly must be stupid because you run a whole nation of superheroes and yet you have no idea how they even work!"
It was quite a sight to see a 16-year-old girl like you yell your lungs out at the President and the rest of them were just gawking at the two of you, even the guards who were meant to do something in case you went to far.
"So you mean to tell me that you can get back there powers?" She asked skeptically, raising a brow.
"Well, I can't," You growled when you heard her scoff, feeling your temper rise and digging your nails into Max's hand to stop yourself from punching her. You ignored the little cry of pain from Max and instead just focused on the woman before you.
"But I know someone who can."
