On the way, he told his father all about the trials. Owen made some comments on how he could have won the fight while still reassuring him that he did well for his age against a veteran, that it was to be expected from all their practice beforehand.

At the gates were the five Elite Knights Commanders who welcomed the new recruits. Hector was one of them. He was more than pleased to see his brother return. The recruits were housed in a dorm-like structure at the other side of the training grounds, behind the main hall. Each room had two bunk beds. Four Squires per room, Aiden and Brum were roommates.

The next day they had to chose their proclivities. There were seven to choose from Swordsmanship, Spearsmanship, Archery, Knife-throwing, Axe-wielding, Axe-throwing, and Bludgeon.

"You can choose to learn as many proclivities as you'd like, just make sure you master at least one," said Commander Lew, he then directed the novice knights to the respective training areas.

"Still choosing Spearsmanship Brum?" questioned Aiden.

"I don't know why but I'm leaning towards the weapon that beat me, but I like the reach advantage of the spear."

"Going for your original choice then?"

"Yes, everyone wants to be a swordsman, you?"

"Still swordsmanship," said Aiden with confidence.

"Of course, you're a natural at it."

"Speaking of long-range, archery would be a good choice as well, but maybe after I've mastered the art of the sword."

"Sound like a plan. Alright then, see you at lunch."

Aiden joined the other aspiring swordsmen. He was surprised to see his father as one of the instructors.

"Let's start with your names," said Hector beside Owen. He gave the beginner lessons to those who showed bad form in the trials.

"You come with me my boy," said Owen

"I won't be joining the others?"

"You've already learned those lessons, I will teach you more advanced ones."

He tossed Aiden a long sword. Owen had the heavier great sword.

"Now you've mastered the basics, it's time to learn techniques. When you fought the Veteran knight what did you struggle with?"

"I couldn't match his strength and size," replied Aiden tasting the weight of his sword.

"That's because you're not suppose to if that's the case. When facing a stronger opponent you have to use their strength against them. Parry their strikes, don't try to stop their swing and lock swords. They have the advantage there. Agility and quick strikes are what will earn you your victory. If you can, strike first and strike fast. Disarm them quickly." Owen disarmed Aiden to demonstrate.
