Janis and Cady had grown to be quite close, attending the same school and sitting together with their friend Damian. Living next to each other was also extremely helpful, and something more was bubbling.
Janis was lying on her back, staring at her ceiling, when had had enough. She wanted to see Cady, so she slowly slid off her bed and walked over to her window. Sure enough, there was Cady, sitting at her desk. Considering their windows were actually quite close, they were able to grab the attention of the other girl quite quickly.
She grabbed her martial arts stick and stuck it out the window, knocking it on Cady's gently. Within seconds, she was there, blowing her curls out of her face, attempting to open her door. It often got stuck, making Janis laugh at her frustrated faces.
As it slowly slid open, Cady spoke. "Hi!"
"Hey, can I come over?"
"Sure." Cady called, looking over her shoulder. "My dad is taking a business call, so we need to be quiet."
"Okay, there in a minute." And Janis shut her window closed, making sure to lock it before grabbing her shoes, phone and keys, before quickly saying bye to her father, who was pretty much passed out on the couch. "Don't forget to feed my sister!" She called, slamming the door behind her.
Living only next door, it was easy for Janis to get Cady's house. She even had a key, and let herself in without knocking. "Hi Mr Heron!" She whispered to him while he was on his call, who returned with a wave, barely acknowledging she had arrived.
Skipping up the stairs, she snuck her head in Cady's parents room where Mrs Heron sat, face mask applied roughly to her face, magazine in her hands. She waved, in and out before tucking her way into Cady's room.
"Hi Caddie." She said out loud, setting down her phone on Cady's vanity. "Wait, Caddie?"
"Boo!"
Janis screamed, hands flinging to her face to cover her eyes. "Don't scare me!" She panted, her heart racing. She didn't do well with scares.
Cady stood there smiling from behind the door, and stuck her tongue out. "You suck!"
Janis rolled her eyes, and her eyes wandered over to the large pink, purple and blue striped flag on her wall, her eyes lingering on the pink. "Hey, Caddie?"
"Mm?"
"When did you know?" She motioned towards the flag.
Cady's eyes flickered over to it. "I think I always knew. Everyone says that, of course. But I don't know, I just always had the idea in the back of my head. I came out two years ago, though."
Janis smiled. "Good for you!"
Her friend returned the smile, and pointed to next door where Janis's flag hung inside the other houses window. "And you?"
"Oh." Janis never liked talking about it. She wasn't afraid, she just didn't feel the need to. She sat down on Cady's beds, grabbing a stuffed elephant and stroked it's head. "I never liked guys. But I didn't know I liked girls, I just thought I wanted to be there friend, or be like them. But that's wasn't it, clearly." She laughed. "I came out at, like, eleven. I didn't care, it was normal for me and my parents pretty much already knew."
Cady sat next to her friend on the bed, gently laying her hand on Janis's knee. She flinched, but didn't pull away. "That's cool. My parents didn't really understand at first, but they're okay with it now, especially my mom who wants to set me up with every. single. girl. she. sees." She giggled. "It's funny, but tiring. I've never had a boyfriend or girlfrie-"
Her eyes widened. Her lips buzzed, the scent of cherry lingering.
Janis had kissed her.
It was quick, and sweet. But not something a friend would do, not even a best friend.
She slowly turned towards Janis, who had now moved to the other side of the bed. "I-I, Cady, I'm sor-"
"No!"
"What?"
"No, don't be sorry." She smiled softly at her friend. "It's okay. I've always..." Cady's voice lowered, Janis leaning in to hear her better. "I've always wanted to do that."
They locked eyes and beamed at each other. Cady moved closer to Janis, and wrapped her arms around her, saying nothing.
The moment of hugging lasted for a while until Janis looked up at Cady. "So we're ok? Or what are we?"
Cady grinned at her. "Of course we're okay. But, let's go slow. If this means anything to you, obviously..."
Janis wriggled out of Cady's grasp and grabbed her shoulders. "I wouldn't have kissed you if I didn't want anything. Let alone twice."
"You kissed me once."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes?"
Janis kissed her again. A little longer this time, but she still pulled away quickly. "I'm pretty sure that was twice."
Cady smiled into her eyes, locking her hands with Janis's. "I think it was."
"Wanna get ice cream?"
"Like a date?"
"Only if it means something to you."
Cady grinned, and pulled Janis up to her feet, kissing her cheek. "I am pretty sure it means something to me."
