I'm Always Right

Janis and Cady were not dating, but they certainly liked each other. It was obviously, really. Just not enough for the two girls to realise.

Cady, being the math wiz, was helping Janis with her homework one afternoon. Janis was buzzing and unfocused, maybe because she hated maths, or because Damien had accidentally let it slip that Cady liked her back. Her heart was racing constantly around Cady, but now that she knew, everything seemed to move in slow motion and Janis was getting frustrated.

"Ugh, this is so hard!" She groaned.

Cady gave a soft laugh, a small smile and blush creeping up on her face. "It's really not, just watch me do it." She moved her pencil a few times over the equation, speaking slowly as she instructed Janis on what to do.

Of course, Janis wasn't listening. She was simply looking at Cady, who still had rosy cheeks. "Ok." She would say occasionally, although it was obvious she wasn't paying any attention.

This lasted another five minutes, before Cady's face suddenly snapped up, locking eyes with Janis. "You're not looking at the work." She said bluntly, although inside she had butterflies. Of course she knew Janis wasn't very good at math, but she didn't want her tutoring to go to waste. Janis pulled a face, scrunching her eyebrows and almost pouting. Cady knew that look, and sighed. "What's on your mind?"

Janis stared ahead silently, unsure of whether to just spill everything or say she was simply tired.

As she continued to ponder, she felt Cady's hand gently grab hers. "What's on your mind?" She slowly asked again.

Janis smiled quickly at the interaction between them. She didn't want to wait any longer, and decided to go for it. "Cady, I know something."

"Is it about the work?" Cady cracked a smile, but her heart was beating so fast she thought it would leap out of her chest.

"No," Janis whispered slowly. "It's about... you."

Cady looked into her eyes, and wondered what she meant. "And what's that?"

As Janis took a deep breath, she could feel her hand shaking in the grip of Cady's. She wanted to feel calm, but this was a crazy moment, for both of them. "I know you like me." The words escaped her mouth, and she smiled as if a brick she had been carrying had been lifted from her grasp. But something was wrong.

Cady instantly dropped her hand, flinging it up to cover her shocked expression. "Oh, oh g-gosh." Tears sprung into her eyes. "I'm sorry J-Janis. I know you wouldn't l-like me back, b-but I couldn't help it-"

"Hey, hey, hey! No, no Caddie." Janis spoke fast, not expecting this reaction. She grabbed her hands again, wiping away some tears on Cady's face in the process. "I like you too!" Janis wanted for her to express her feelings to be a bit more thought out, but with Cady crying and apologising she knew she had to just spit it out. "I like you too." She repeated.

Cady's face slowly brightened up, and she grinned through her slowly disappearing tears. "Y-you do?"

"Yes!" She laughed, her heart pounding. "But I'm right, aren't I? You do like me?" Janis questioned.

"Yes!" Cady flung her arms around Janis, embracing her like she never had before. "You're so right!"

"I'm always right." Janis smirked into the hug, earning a quick giggle from Cady.

But as Cady pulled away, she said something that confused the hell out of Janis. "Um, but you're not always right."

Janis clearly looked puzzled. As she didn't answer, Cady grabbed her hand and laughed as she pointed to the math. "This isn't right!"

Janis's face broke into a smile and an idea brewed up in her brain. "Ha ha ha, very funny Caddie. But," she paused, for dramatic effect, as Damien once told her. "I'll make you a deal. I'll really try to improve my studies, if," she paused once more.

Cady hadn't realised that she was leaning in, nervous to hear what she would have to do. "If?" She gestured for Janis to continue.

Without waiting any longer, Janis pulled Cady close and gave a quick, soft kiss. A first for both of them, they smiled and pulled away, gazing into each other's eyes. "If," Janis paused for the final time before continuing with, "you'll be my girlfriend."

"Deal." Cady immediately replied, unable to contain her clear excitement.

Maybe maths isn't so bad, Janis thought and smiled at Cady, who returned the gesture with a sweet grin.
