Iseul's eyes went wide, and Mark had to close Donghyuck's mouth that was agape.
"What the hell is this?" Renjun murmured as he looked at the screen in confusion.
"How could someone link Iseul's disappearance to us?" Yangyang asked.
Sicheng suddenly walked in the room, his eyes looking for the girl, "Ah, Iseul, aren't you coming? In case you forgot, you have practice with me today, and just because the guys are staying home doesn't mean you can skip- "
He stopped himself once he realized no one was paying attention to him, and his eyes followed theirs until they met the TV.
"What the..."
He ran to Taeyong's office, almost forgetting to knock, "Hyung! They traced her back to us somehow!"
"What are you talking about?"
"Iseul, the police. They know she's with us, except they think we kidnapped her, and now it's everywhere on the news!"
Taeyong got up so with such force that his chair almost fell over.
"How the hell did they make the connection with us?"
"I don't think that's our biggest problem for now. The police's after us, they think that we're breaking the rules by going after a civilian, and so does the rest of the population."
Taeyong's grip on his glass was so strong that it broke in his hand, and blood started dripping from his palm onto the sheets of paper lying on the desk.
"As long as the State knows we're not doing anything against the Code, that's all we need. They can't blame us for this."
"I know that," Sicheng replied. "But the civilian population doesn't. They're gonna believe we are going to do the same thing the Dark Feathers did decades ago. You know how that ended up last time."
"A deadly riot."
Taeyong let out a sigh. Sicheng was right. It didn't matter if the State believed them. If the rest of the population didn't, they would create a chaos.
"We need to find out who told the police about us and Iseul."
"And what do we do then?"
"We kill them."
In Iseul's basement, or rather her parents', Kang's hackers had sent a message to the police from the girl's phone, also hacking her location so the police wouldn't find out where the phone was.
In the fake text, Kang had asked them to mention NCT's name, and the police fell for it right away. They tried to contact Iseul's phone again, but Kang didn't answer of course.
"What now?" he asked Park who sat on his couch like he owned the place.
"Now? We wait."
As Kang was about to retort, the younger male cut him off.
"Let the police do their work. The last thing we want is to get involved more than what we already did. We gave them everything they needed; they'll bring her back."
"A soon as we get her back, I'm gonna kill those bastards for taking my daughter!"
"You're not going to do anything," Park spat. "Let the State take care of it."
"What do you mean? What does the State have to do with any of this?"
"Your daughter is a civilian. As part of a mafia, we all have rules to respect. One of them includes not hurting a civilian."
"What if you do?"
"You're sentenced to death."
"So..."
"So you won't have to get your hands dirty, no. Isn't that fantastic? You just need to sit and relax while enjoying the show," Park said with a sadistic smile.
What Kang didn't know, was that Park knew better than anyone what NCT was risking with the State for going after a civilian, for the simple reason that he himself, had broken that rule years ago. Except he didn't get caught, and disappeared for a while, just the time things would quiet down.
But Park didn't know that NCT didn't break any rules, he didn't know that Iseul wasn't a civilian anymore.
Speaking of the girl, she was now seated on the couch with the others.
"Why don't you guys just tell the police that you didn't kidnap me and that I'm not even considered as a civilian anymore?" she asked.
"Because if we do, you'll get killed," Taeyong spoke as entered the room.
"What?"
"If Park knows that you're not protected by the Law anymore, he'll kill you. Right now, he's letting the police do this so he doesn't have to get his hands dirty, but telling them you're not a civilian would destroy the protection he thinks you have. It's better that he thinks you're still under the Law's protection for now," he explained. "Except if you want your life to end in a rather brutal way?"
Iseul shook her head and gulped. Damn, that man really had a knack to make her feel terrified.
"So what do we do?" Chenle asked.
"I have something!" Taeil suddenly barged in the room.
Every pair of eyes looked at him expectantly, waiting for the eldest to speak.
"The person who tampered with our system is a part of the gang you guys went after the other day, you know, when you ran in the store and Iseul was there, and then you found out Park was a part of the gang?"
Everyone nodded except Iseul, her mind had stopped mid-sentence.
"The man who got into our house is a part of that gang too?" Renjun exclaimed. "Then that means he works for Park!"
"I knew that son of a bitch was somehow connected to this..." Taeyong cursed as he got up. "We need to act now, I won't let him go on with whatever his plan is."
He left in a hurry, probably ready to come up with an idea to murder Park once and for all.
"Iseul?" Donghyuck asked when he noticed the girl wasn't speaking.
"You guys were the ones who got into the store the other day?" she asked, her eyes filled with shock as she looked at Renjun and Jaemin.
