Every March, Bulgaria gives those close to him a martenitsa.

He instructs them to wear it until the end of the month (or until they see a stork, whichever comes first).

(A martenitsa is small piece of adornment that is made of red and white yarn that is to be worn either around the wrist or pinned on the clothes.  Bulgarians give them to each other on March 1 and wear them to the end of the month, or until they see a stork, which is considered a harbinger of spring.  When it gets taken off, traditions can vary, such as tying it on a branch of a tree or placing it under a stone.)
