I knew in that moment I was asking too much of David Jacobs; to be concerned and to not act as so, to be angry and not respond. I knew then, as he was there holding me to his chest, his heart beating so soothingly beneath my fingers, he was just putting up an act. Keeping me safe.

From the corner of the room Everett begins to cry and Davey slips away to hold him. I roll onto my back and tilt my head to glance up at the starry night sky through the fogged glass of the window. The moon isn't full but it is just as bright, the stars twinkling so beautifully against the darkest canvas of the night sky I've ever seen.
Everett quiets down and Davey slides back into bed, breathing deeply. His eyes feel like they are burning a stare into my temple. I know he wants to speak. I can't.

"Birdie," his voice is low and quiet.

I continue to look out the window, I don't want to meet his gaze.

"Liz, please look at me," now he sounds sad. He sounds worried.

I slowly shift my head to meet his eyes with mine and there he is. Green eyes, brown hair, pale skin. He's waiting patiently for me. He's calling me home. Home to him, home to a family. Home to love.

"No one will ever hurt you again," Davey says in an honest tone. I know he means it. "He can't get you here. With me, no one else exists."

I know I'm going to be okay, no matter the current situation. I'll be okay in the end with David Jacobs beside me and my home right here with the stars.
