David and I make our way along the brick streets of Manhattan, admiring the warm weather of the day.
I look over at the tall boy as the light from the sun starts to fade, hiding behind the tall buildings and casting orange hues along his face. He's dressed as normal, but there's something different about him today. He's not smiling.
"David," I say, looking away so he won't notice I've been staring.
"Yes?" he answers, and out of the corner of my eye his head turn my way.
"You're not as chipper as usual," I state, glancing over at the right side of the street.
Two little children play on the side of the street, chasing a dog. Golden fur flashes by a little girl, barking and then turning around the lick the kid's face. I smile at them.
"I'm fine," David tells me as I turn back to face him.
I roll my eyes. "And that's why you look so unhappy."
His hazel eyes meet mine for a second, they flash and then return to his normal calming state. He pulls off his cap, running a hand through his hair and then flopping his hat back on his head. He bites his lip, shaking his head.
"Sometimes I don't get you, Bownett," he says, a small smirk on his face. "I mean, you are so confusing."
I furrow my brow. "What do you mean?" I question. "I think I make myself quite clear."
Davey chuckles. "You can get beaten up, be fine. You can go through the hell you went through that night, be fine. And, you can help everyone else." He continues to shake his head, stopping. Pulling his lower lip into his mouth, he sighs. "How?"
Looking down at my boots, I contemplate with my thoughts. Tell him or not? Rummaging around with my thoughts, I come to the conclusion to tell David Jacobs everything he needs to know. Piece by piece, to make it easy on both of us. But to start off... answer his question.
I continue to walk, strolling past David and continuing our conversation.
"I have to, David. I have this family to take care of, and we have new kids who show up often. I have to take care of them when Jack isn't around," I admit, picking at the hem of my shirt. "I do everything I can to keep myself alive because there are so many people who need me. And sometimes I need them. They make me forget."
I sigh, ending my short explanation.
David nods. "Okay."
"David, please don't-"
There's a tug on my shirt, and I turn to see the little girl who had been running around just minutes before.
"Hey, hun, what's the matter?" I ask as I notice tears running down her face.
Quickly, with the sleeve of my button up, I wipe her tears away.
"I can't find my mommy!" she cries, looking around frantically.
