"Birdie?" Les's voice asks me as we walk out into the fresh air.
Exciting Jacobi's, we start walking in the direction of the Lodging House. I look down at the little curly haired boy.
"Yeah, Les?"
"Can you's be ma goil?"
I smile at the boy as his brown eyes look up at me, shining with hope. He's the sweetest, most adorable kid ever. I nod.
I reply, "Of course I can!"
Les smiles at me, a toothy grin that lights up his whole face.
Davey laughs from beside me. I look up at the boy, his smile flashing across his face as his laughter rumbles from his stomach. When he stops laughing, he looks at me."What?" He chuckles as I glare at him.
"You don't want me to be your brothers girl?" I question, crossing my arms and narrowing my eyes.
Les pipes up, "No! He probably want to steal you from me." The little boy glares at the older boy.
David's face grows red. "Not at all. I just think it's odd, Les. She's eight years older than you."
I'm starting to get the impression David might not be the best when it comes to kids Les's age.
I grab Les's small hand. "It's okay, Les. Don't listen to David."
I confidently look ahead in order to send the message to the tall boy that I don't believe in crushing a kid and his dreams.
Les sticks his tongue out at David. "Don't even think about stealing her."

The boys walk me back to the Lodge. Les holds my hand the whole way there, and gives me a peck on the cheek before he slips off to his house a few blocks down.
Davey stands in front of me, his hands shoved in his pockets, gaze on mine. He rocks back and forth from his heels to the balls of his feet. His hair is messy underneath his cap, a little damp from sweat. His plaid shirt is buttoned up to his neck, a tie around his throat, and his brown vest all buttoned up as well. His newsies cap is placed on his head perfectly. His brown trousers don't have a spec of dirt on them. Green eyes watch me.
"Your brother is a real charmer," I say, looking in the direction Les went. He's still skipping down the street.
Davey grins, chuckling. "He sure is."
There's an awkward silence.
Finally, David speaks up. "I should get going before Les falls down a hole or something."
His comment sends giggles through me. "Okay."
But if I have to admit it, I don't want him to leave. I want him to stay and talk to me and make me laugh. I want to get to know Davey, not get mad at him for being nice to me.
