I want to talk about the ugly practice of dowry. It is prevalent in every stratum of our society. The economically challenged call it as it is and spend their life savings to get their daughters married off and pray that they are not overly miserable, not burnt alive or dismembered during their marriage.
The well-to-do don't call it by such a name - they simply 'gift' the groom whatever he and his family have demanded over a period of time, naturally for their daughter and her creature comforts. As you know, one can never have too many houses, cars or private planes. This is apart from the ridiculous amount of money that the bride's family would have paid for that destination wedding and all the frills that get it to be the talk of the town– which it is, till some other idiot decides to outdo you.
Rest assured that people will keep bad-mouthing all the effort and arrangements you would have made while enjoying your hospitality. It seems like a bribe- to send away the liability and 'here's a little extra for you so that you don't change your mind.'
