"Luke," Mary started, turning her body so she was laying on her side so her face was facing Luke's, "I was thinking that we could go visit Kate today." Mary said, her words rolling out of her tongue without hesitation.
Mary had replayed over and over what she was supposed to say to Luke. Both Kate and Luke played a really big part in Mary's life but at the moment she felt like they belonged to different parts of her life, and somehow she wanted to blend those two separate worlds together.
"Oh." Luke said, confusion clear in the single word uttered. Mary barely ever mentioned her best friend to him, it was like she wanted to keep the two apart from ever meeting, so it wasn't really weird that Luke was confused.
"Yeah." Mary said, taking Luke's slightly sweaty hand in hers.
"Why?" Luke asked without really caring if it sounded weird.
"Because," Mary started, "you two are both important to me."
Mary didn't know how to explain her sudden change of opinion on this whole Kate-knowing-about-Luke thing. She just felt like maybe it wouldn't be so bad if they met. Maybe Luke really loved Mary for who she was and not for her looks. (Mary had tried to convince herself that for quite some time but every time Luke wasn't by her side she felt like that wasn't true.)
"Are you sure about this, babe?" Luke said, nuzzling his face in the crook of Mary's neck after kissing her softly on the end of her jaw, below her ear.
Mary just nodded because she knew that her voice would betray her and she didn't want Luke to think that it was his fault that she didn't want Kate to meet him (even though it kind of was.)
"I love you." Luke whispered against Mary's neck and wrapped his arms around his girlfriend. (Luke felt butterflies in his stomach just by thinking that Mary was his girlfriend and it also made him feel all happy and giggly.)
"I love you too." Mary said, her voice cracking at the last word and a tear threatened to fall down her cheek. God, Mary hated herself at the moment. She was making a big deal out of something that wasn't even happening, but she just couldn't stop her stupid thoughts.
See, this was why Mary hated to overthink. Her mind was one big mess.
"Babe," Luke said, raising his head so he could see Mary's face properly, "why are you crying?" Luke asked the moment he saw the tears staining Mary's cheeks, he was honestly really concerned and didn't know why Mary was sad.
Mary closed her eyes and shook her head, she didn't even understand why she was crying. A strand of her hair fell in front of her face and Luke brushed it to the side, behind her ear.
"Mary." Luke whispered, leaving a soft kiss on Mary's cheek.
"Please." Luke continued, "let me understand for once."
Just seeing his girlfriend cry made Luke feel really bad and he was now also really close to crying.
"I don't know why." Mary cried out, burying her face in Luke's chest so Luke couldn't see her face.
Luke hugged Mary even tighter to him and let her rest her face on his chest even though his chest was now wet from Mary's tears. Luke knew that he shouldn't force Mary to tell him so he would simply just wait until Mary was comfortable enough to explain to him.
"Come on," Luke breathed out after he was sure that Mary had calmed down after minutes of silence, "let's go get something to eat."
"No." Mary pouted, shaking her head. She was tired and didn't feel like she had the strength to get out of bed.
Luke could sense that Mary was tired but he could also hear her stomach growl, so Luke scooped Mary into his arms with his arms under Mary's bum, her legs at his sides, and lifted her up from the bed. Mary immediately wrapped her arms around Luke neck.
"I really do love you, Mary" Luke said before kissing Mary on top of her head and carried her over to the kitchen.
