(4) Out of the Shadows

Date: 9-26-2023

At 9 PM Miles came to in a hospital bed, the white light flashing in his eyes as his eyelids fluttered open & shut. 

His head turned, getting sight of his older sister & mother. 

He took another deep breath & opened his eyes, taking in the full light of the room. 

His eyes slowly adjusted to the light, finally getting a clear sight of his sister & mother. 

“Hey”, Miles said, his voice was deeper than usual & raspy, full of gravel. He tried sitting himself up, but he couldn’t find the strength. He looked over, seeing the IV leading into his arm. 

“Just lay down honey, the doctor said you need to rest”, Ms. Jones said. She placed her hand on his shoulder. 

“I’m fine”, Miles said as he pushed himself up & slid up the back of the bed, sitting up. “What happened”? 

Miles was hit by a sudden wave of heat & dehydration. He sway back & forth as he lost focus on everyone & everything in the room. He was about to fall back, but Michelle placed her hand on his shoulder & handed him a cup of water. 

He lifted his shaky hand to grab the water, taking a few sips from it. 

“Honey, what happened, where were you”, Ms. Jones asked? 

“I was walking home with Nathan, Jenn, & Oliver”, Miles said as he put the water aside. “Something happened & when I woke up, I was there. Tubes in my arms, others screaming, bodies on the floor”. 

He remembered the faces on the lifeless bodies, tears streaming his eyes. He quickly wiped them away. 

“I came to back & forth, the last thing I remember, Spider-man was carrying me out on his shoulder”, Miles said, he was starting to sway again, he took another drink. “What… What happened”? 

“You have no broken bones, but you are very dehydrated, you have tremendous blood loss, & you had an open abrasion on your neck”, Michelle said.  

“Honey, there is an officer outside if you could speak to him, give him your statement & then we can go home”, Ms. Jones said as she knelt down to be eye-to-eye with Miles. 

The officer stepped in, Miles gave him his statement, along with anything he could have remembered about the place. 

“Officer, are my friends okay, they were with me”, Miles asked as the officer was about to walk out? 

“Not sure yet, you were the only one that we found & identified from your group of friends”, The officer said as he opened the door & walked out.

“Can we go now”, Miles asked as he looked over to his family? 

Michelle & Ms. Jones left the room so Miles could change into the clothes they brought him from home. But once he was done, he slowly made his way out of his room to his family. 

“Come on Miles”, Michelle said as she wrapped an arm around him, helping him take balance. Ms. Jones held his other side as Miles threw his arms over Michelle & his mom’s shoulders. 

They walked him back to the car, helping him into the back seat. 

They quickly drove him home & put him to bed.

Miles woke up early in the morning, the bright light from his open window woke him.
